  • Chien-Ming Wang: most undervalued player in baseball

Alright well Wang is the most undervalued player in baseball. Right now he is 5-0 and tied for 33rd in strikeouts with a 3.23 Era, which is bloated from his Boston start. He has won 19 games for us each of the last two years and people keep on saying well he playing on the Yankees and gets plenty of run support. You know what that is complete BS as you see no other pitcher was winning like that and no other pitcher is winning like that now. He is starting to show the strikeout potential he has without losing much efficiency and the Yankees were bittering over 600000 with this guy. He is the most undervalued player in the MLB and we need to give him a long term contract NOW.

Totally agreed man. Wang can wang it for the strikeout, and win a lot of games.

There is simply no need for the Yankees to offer Wang a long term deal right now. Remember they are the Yankees. Other teams have to take the risk of locking up young players so the Yankees don't swoop in and get them during free agency.

All the Yanks have to do is be sure that Wang is happy with the deals he is signing (avoid arbitration like the plague). And then if he is still producing at a high level and projects to keep doing that sign him to the big deal.

Be patient. Wang can't go free agent until 2010 or 2011 (I can't tell which).

The exception would be if Wang and his agent lose their minds and agree to a Longoria type deal.

I'm sure that the newly-revitalized Rays may have a few more undervalued players than we do. After all, regardless of our standing, we are still the Yankees and do get a lot more press than many other teams, and Wang is our ace right now.

Wang's slider has been working and he's also striking people out. I remember folks said that he'd never continue success with his BB:K ratio being so long, but he's still getting guys out.

I guess that he wouldn't be as underrated if he signed a contract paying him in the $5m/yr range?

Wang has been pushing hard at being the best pitcher in baseball for the past 2+ years. Right now he either is or darn well just a hair short of that position.

I'd never thought I'd see an undervalued Ace pitcher on the Yankees, but he is. I wouldn't call him the most though.

I agree. Bad things happen to pitchers all the time, and with Wang belonging to the Yankees for a few more seasons, why rush?

I'm actually surprised that people actually undervalue Yankee players now. I'm used to being ragged on how overvalued Yankee players are.

A player is over valued when he gets paid vast somes of money and cannot help his team to consistent pennants and WS rings. Players who do help lead their team to these goals over their careers are the under valued players.

in that context do you class A-Rod as really over valued ?

Yes, by far. But not by what he adds to a franchise in recognition value. Many fans will come to a game just to see Arod, purchase Arod merchandise, etc. As he closes in on Aarons HR record, the excitement will grow. The Yankees sealed the deal when they long term signed him, however they may have also sold out their chance to win more WS. Lets hope not. Baseball is a business with goals. First to make money, second to win WS rings. Some teams look for just the first goal. the Yankees always try to do both since Steinbrenner took charge.

the hitting has never been in a problem ( other than the p/offs ) its pitching that is needed to get over the hurdle and win #27

For the most part, baseball is ultimate team game. No one player makes much of a difference. It is the combination of pitching, hitting, and defense. When all three come at the right time or at the right point in a game, a win can be earned for the team. It really doesn't matter how much a player or team hits, but far more important WHEN a player or team hits. Same goes for pitching. Wins is the only thing that matters. As long as your staff earns the most wins, your team will go to the playoffs. Your winning pitcher only needs to give up less runs than his team scores for him. It makes no difference if he wins 3-2 or 9-7. Likewise for defense, an error can have litle meaning or it can mean the game when made at a crucial point.

No because no other Yankee pitcher was able to do what he does. So saying he is like any other pitcher is utterly ridiculous.
