  • Joba Going to Rotation?

I wasn't really paying attention to the postgame, but did I hear Girardi say that they're beginning to extend Joba towards starting? Next time I was paying attention, Bob Lorenz was talking about the young power arms in the minors, namely Cox, Melancon, and Robertson, as potential bullpen replacements.

You heard correctly. I'm in favor of it. He has 4 pitches and he's been a starter his whole career. 150 innings > 70 innings. Plus I can't wait to hear everyone screaming when Farnsworth blows one in the 8th inning after Joba starts.

Honestly, im starting to like the idea of Joba staying in the bullpen. But if Edwar Ramirez continues to do his thing, and we can get Bruney back and being productive again... we gotta move him. Otherwise, we have no bullpen without Joba

What possibly could put a crimp in Joba starting is that either Kennedy/Hughes or both start pitching the way they are expected to. Right now they are aging, and when they become ripe...watch out....here comes the BRONX EXPRESS.

I know people have mixed emotions on the topic, but I'm all for it! I'm glad they are looking to 'stretch' Joba and having him join the starting rotation.

I don't get why people in the Media are acting so surprised.

This was the plan all along. Did they really think that the Yankees were blowing smoke when they said they were going to do it?

Joba pitched two innings last night in a blowout and somehow it was a big deal.
He's done it before, but I guess since he hadn't done it in such a long time it was news.

Anyways, Joba going to the Rotation is a good thing.
But I'm curious to see how good he will be after batters see him a 2nd, 3rd and possibly a 4th time.

As for replacements....right now I wouldn't mind seeing Veras or Ramirez get a shot at the setup role. Kyle has had moments, but I don't trust the guy or Hawkins.

To take Joba's spot....I would like to see J.B. Cox right now. Mark Melacon still needs work, but he would be the guy I'm looking at for around the ASB.

This has all the earmarks of Bad Hank overruling Cashman on the usage of Chamberlain. Its just hard to move a guy from one-inning role to starting and expect things to workout.

What happens is what happens. Do I like Joba in the setup role? Do I hope he returns? Yes. I've got the pipe dreams of seeing him replace Rivera, as I'm sure many of us do, but that'll come in time.

RIGHT NOW, however, our starting pitching hasn't been very good. The offense severely lacks timely hitting, as has been the case over the past few years, but the pitching is a problem that we can quantitatively rectify. Provided Joba is willing and ready to make the switch to a starter, I think it's worth a shot.

I'm guessing that Kennedy will get pushed out, so we'll have:

                Wang
                Petite
                Mussina
                Rasner
                Joba

Correct? That's not so bad. Mussina and Pettite need to step up. Honestly, I hope Moose doesn't take it to heart, but he could make a decent long reliever / spot starter ... he's always out of gas by the 6th/7th but is untouchable for like 3 innings. He's also shown interest in being a bit of a mentor. Petite needs to make some corrections as well.

                  ...

I'm on the fence about Joba moving to the rotation. He is a great bridge to Rivera but if he works out as a starter, all the better. I'm for giving him a shot as a starter since if it doesn't work out, we're back where we started.

If he goes through the order the first time with no trouble, but the second time around he has trouble then I would move him back to the bullpen.

I don't know if this is such a great idea. I think that he should stay in the Setup role but if he becomes a starter than Kennedy should be the one that gets knocked. Whoever said Moose and Andy are on there way out, I absolutely agree. Last years of their contracts and don't worry Ian cause you will have your chance next year if Joba enters the rotation.

                        08 rotation:::
                        Wang
                        Pettitte
                        Mussina
                        Rasner
                        Chamberlain

                        09 rotation::: no order
                        Wang
                        Rasner
                        Hughes
                        Kennedy
                        Chamberlain

Can't. Once you move him to the Starting Rotation...I think his setup days are done.

I do have questions. What happens if Rasner pitches lights out the rest of the way and Kennedy continues to build on what he did last night and improves.
What happens in July when Hughes is ready to come back?

I hope for neither but it's going to be very interesting.

Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing IPK or Hughes get a full year @ SWB.
