Gonzalez would need to hit much better to be anything other than a bench guy.
Jeter at 1B, A-Rod at 3B and Furcal at SS. If A-Rod moves to SS, then a 3B spot opens up and not sure what the market is for 3B next season. Furcal seems like the best SS on the market next season, so why not? Still, nothing should change. A-Rod, Cano and SS are in trenched in their current position. Big Tex should be the Yankees' target to man 1B next season.

I agree completely regarding Gonzalez. He's nothing more than a bench player until he proves more with the bat. It's baffling he even be consider a starter. I know people like their young talent in their farm, but don't think too highly of them.

Cano will likely remain at 2B.

I agree almost completely with TonyStark's sentiments. Jeter will be at SS for the rest of his career minus maybe a couple at the very end. However, I don't think this is a horrible thing. I'm well aware of Jeter's weakness to the glove side but he is still an above average ss in my opinion.

But if he was to move from ss, the obvious choice in my opinion is A-Rod. Remember that he was one of the best defensive shortstops in baseball before coming to NY.

Jeter move from SS? You'd have to use the Jaws of Life to pry him away from Shortstop!

Yankee fans should be resigned that Jeter will be the SS of this team until he's 40.

I don't see A-Rod moving back to SS for some reason. And Jeter's 12 homers at first would hurt, altho it'd be good defense and other offensive numbers..

I like Gonzalez as coming up to start at short next year, unless we can find a short term solution until he's more ready.

If Jeter would accept being moved, I wouldn't mind. I think that Jeter needs to remember that several people like Cal have moved from short, so he could also.

Cano has good movement away from the glove side also, since he is the one who often covers some shots down the middle.

Jeter's limited movement along the glove side may even expose him at 2B, since people would really be looking to see if his fielding is anything but "good" for the routine plays. A 2Bman has to back up the 1Bman, since that's who he has to throw to on a play, unless the pitcher covers 1B.

If when playing 2B, Jeter can use his movement to his right for balls hit down the middle, that would be great. He would still be able to make the jump-throw thing, since in both cases, his back would be to 1B and that's where he'd have to throw to.

I see Girardi as being reluctant to upset Jeter like that, and Torre would never have even asked Jeter, since he still keeps in touch with Jeter. It would likely take Cashman and Girardi to ask Jeter to move to 2B.

started a topic Cano at short?

    Cano at short?

After seeing Cano just stretch way far to the 1st base side it just got me wondering- some people think that Jeter should be moved from SS perhaps after this year, and I agree. Do you think that if that were the case, Cano could play short? Or are we kind of set on Alberto Gonzalez? Or just not moving Jeter yet?

Just throwing it out there.. not that it hasn't been thrown out there before lol
