Yankees set to open series with Angels

The last time Shawn Chacon took the mound in a meaningful game, the Yankees had their backs to the wall, facing elimination in Game 4 of the American League Division Series.
Chacon, making his postseason debut, delivered a fine performance for New York, holding the Angels to two runs over 6 1/3 innings and helping the Yankees force Game 5 with a 3-2 win in the Bronx.

When Chacon takes the hill for his 2006 debut on Friday, he'll be facing those same Angels, though he'll be in Anaheim and the stakes won't be quite as high.

Both teams will be looking to even their records at 2-2 after dropping two out of three games in their respective season-opening series. The Yankees bashed their way to an Opening Day win in Oakland before dropping the last two games of the series, while the Angels did the same against the Mariners in Seattle.

Chacon, who was acquired last July to fill a temporary hole in the Yankees rotation, will be looking to kick off his season on the right note, having earned a spot in the rotation with a solid spring.

"We thought he was just a stop-gap guy when we got him," said manager Joe Torre. "Then we find out here's a guy who becomes one of the first four starters we use the following year. That's a pretty good impression he made."

This is the first time Chacon will start a season with a team other than the Rockies, and Torre believes that escaping the pitcher's nightmare that is Colorado will help the 28-year-old over a full season.

"His stuff is based on feel, on his curveball, and breaking balls aren't the same out there," Torre said. "They don't have the same kind of break. Once you find that out, you get that extra confidence."
