I do not believe so. They were formally the highlanders but got nicknamed the Yanks because of the civil war connotations of highlands.

he could be
for back then, teams did not have an official (formal) name
they were called what ever the (sports editor) press/newspapers called them
some of the names were orioles, americans, highlanders,yankees,yanks
in 1913, they officially became the N.Y. Yankees

and the trolly dodgers, dodgers
they officially became the brooklyn dodgers in 1933

He might be. Back then, teams were known mainly for the cities they played in, and the nicknames were frequently given out by newspapers, and there would be a lot of informal nicknames but no official nicknames.
