  • Derek Jeter: 3,000 Hits and beyond

Derek Jeter is now in the Top 20 All-Time for hits. How far he will go is up for much discussion and debate, but what is virtually certain is that he will pass many other greats this year and in the year(s) ahead. The purpose of this thread is to highlight those he's passing, and discuss who's next and how far he will go.

Anyway, the other day Jeter passed Dave Winfield with his 3,111th hit. Next up, this man with 3,141.

Lou Gehrig is the Truest Yankee of them all!

He should get to #11 by the season's end, possibly #10.

I think he will finish behind Hank Aaron, but it will be really interesting to see if he can catch Musial.

Jeter with another good game. I think he went 2 for 5. See ya later Willie Mays.

He's hit over .350 with a .500 slugging percentage since collecting his 3,000 hit back in July. This is Jeter's "Indian Summer".

Jeter is off to a fine start and surprisingly isn't openly complaining about pulling DH duty on occasion.

My guess is that he retires with 3800 hits. Although it really depends on how much his skills erode to the Yankees forcing his hand in retiring. I believe he has said he would like make a solid run at 4000.

It is true that he has more hits than Pete Rose and Robin Young did at the same age, which is the most of anyone in history. Let's look at how hit collectors did after including and after turning 38 years old:

I'd say he has a VERY remote chance at the all time runs scored record. If he kept himself in optimal shape, moved full time to DH, and was lucky enough to not have a major injury or nagging injuries, I think he'd have an outside shot at scoring 500 more runs.

He also could (maybe should?) end up near Musial in career hits... that would definitely be one of the great accomplishments of any player in this so-called Expansion Era (1969-present). Again, luck will play the main part, along with the DH, and how long he stays hungry....
