Selling the team

I think that Hank made have made a phone call asking what the franchise is worth, since the Dodgers just got a $2B price tag. Someone then mentions that they just got a crazy call from the Yanks about selling the team and a reporter catches wind of it and boom. There's your "rumor".

But, he isn't bigger than the team. The teams 100 year history is bigger than one owner( despite this owner getting the team back to championship form).

I wouldn't have minded a plaque like Ruppert's. But, that combination of a monument and plaque is ridiculous( hence my name of it a monuaque). And it shouldn't have been placed where it was. Yogi or Jeter should have been put there.

I think george does deserve the credit. the yanks were absolutely finished when he got them and he made them the biggest team in sports again.

Does he deserve credit? Sure. Did he deserve that monuaque? No. A regular plaque like Ruppert's would have been fine. Did he deserve to have it placed in such a prominent spot in Monument Park in between Dimaggio and Mantle's monuments? No. Jeter's or Yogi's monument should have gone there. Was it a nice gesture to have that remembrance thing in right center field? Yes, but it's served its purpose. Time to switch it back to the championship years.

George isn't bigger than the team. The team is bigger than him. He was a part of it, but he shouldn't be overshadowing the Yankees history.

Yeah, I would put the oversized/undeserved monument across the street so that fans of the future would know who was responsible for tearing down the most famous ballpark in the world.

The only benefit I see in the Steinbrenners selling the Yankees is the hope they stop with the George worship( i.e.: finally change the George thing out in right center back to the championship years, etc. When you go to the stadium, you should be welcomed to a baseball game not a memorial to George....).

Not to mention Monument (To George Steinbrenner) Park in center field...

Hal does scare me a bit. He prides on being a businessman first and baseball guy second. No matter what business you're in, you're whatever the business is in first and a businessman second. That is what got our great companies( the Big 3, Microsoft, etc) into trouble. They lost sight of what they were be it a car maker, software maker, etc and focuses too much on the bottom line like any businessman would do.....

Though as long as he continues to let the baseball people build a great team, I can't complain too much and hope they don't sell the team. I don't think the Steinbrenners will sell the team anytime soon. But IF they do, I really hope they sell it to a passionate owner - a Mark Cuban type - who you know is going spend the money necessary to put a great team on the field every year. I don't think Selig would ever allow a sale to go through to a greedy owner trying to pocket as much as possible. MLB cannot afford for their most important franchise - by a mile - to not be competitive every single year. Hopefully Bud has learned his lesson from McCourt, Wilpon, etc..

Though the Yanks deny it so far, the Daily News is reporting the Steinbrenners are at least kicking the tires on selling the franchise in the wake of the Dodgers $2B sale. They'd be crazy not to frankly - the NYY could we worth as much as $4B, George is gone, they're at the very height of their value, and the family's not as involved these days. Question is:
