  • 2013 Win-Total Prediction Thread

It's been kind of an "interesting" offseason. We haven't made any major moves to change the look of the roster (unless you count Youkilis). This thread is purely just for fun. Let's all try to predict exactly how many games the Yankees will win. I have 75 as the lowest number because I don't think it's realistically possible for this team to have fewer than that. and I have 105 at the high end.

At the end of the season, we'll see who was right and who got closest.

I hate to say it, but I think we're an 87-win team. Especially now that the Blue Jays appear to be a force to be reckoned with in 2013. The Rays will be better than last year if Longoria stays healthy (They have enough good pitching to not feel the loss of Shields, IMO). I expect the Orioles to regress a lot from last year. Their winning percentage in 1-run games and extra-inning games is not sustainable. They're probably a .500 team, but certainly not the punching bag Orioles from the past decade and a half. And finally, the Red Sox: They can't possibly be any worse than they were last year, right? The Yankees are going to miss A-Rod for a long stretch. He might be a non-factor this year. Jeter is going to regress. I expect Kuroda to regress a bit. Pettitte is a huge question mark. He's 40+ and missed lots of starts last year. Same goes for Mariano Rivera. Who's our catcher? I have no idea... Teixeria has been steadily declining ever since joining the Yankees. He hasn't slugged .500 since 2009. Swisher's gone. Granderson was Dave Kingman last year. We need him to rebound in a big way and get on base more.

I picked 88. Blue jays are much improved but they need to be. Sox are improved somewhat. Rays are a little worse. Orioles will likely regress some.

The Yanks catching situation really bothers me. So does RF. Infield defense is also a big problem. I like our pitching though.

I fear you may be right. Coming off major injuries and not being young, Mo and Jeter are question marks. Not so much with Andy, I think he'll do fine. He was injured, but it was a freak injury. Also, I'd like to add that Cano will probably have a monster year.

Cano has a monster year every year but we need other run producers who can pick up the slack when Robbie goes into his inevitable slumps. I don't believe the Yankees have any other hitters that opposing teams really fear anymore.

So far five people have voted and not a single person has gone over 88 wins. I must admit this surprises me.

I always like to see the Yankees do well, but I think 80-85 wins is all this team has in em for now.

Your idea of monster is nowhere's near as big as my monster is. To me, it's at least a 190 OPS+, unless you're giving him positional and defense credit. He had a very good season, as he has done in the past.

I just voted 90. I think we can do that with that pitching staff.

So by your definition there has only been one "monster" season in MLB since Barry Bonds in 2004 (by Pujols in 2008). Miguel Cabrera didn't have a monster season in 2012 or any other season in his career. Joe Dimaggio never had a monster season. Neither did Hank Greenberg. Your standards are very high.

No Miggy had a great season. Honestly, he had a lucky Triple Crown, just happened no one had a very good BA this year, and Hamilton slumped. Don't get me wrong though. I love A-Rod's 2007. Seems like it should be more than the high 170's, but it isn't. I can live with calling that a monster year, but none of Cano's are.

I dont think Cashman is done putting the team together for next year so I will wait until we get closer to spring training before making my vote.

Well if 190 OPS+ is your threshhold for monster status, then yeah, Cano will never come close to having a monster season because he doesnt walk enough.

If A-Rod's 2007 wasnt a monster season i dont know what is. Why choose an arbitrary. 190 OPS+ cutoff.

Well let's come to the middle a little here. If you call Cano's 2012 "monster", then there are about 5 monster season per year. That cheapens the term. Let's limit it to one every three to five years.

You can use that definition if you want. I consider it a monster season since the guy was the best player in baseball BY FAR at his position and had 8.2 WAR, which was 2nd in Major League Baseball after Mike Trout.
