  • PA Question

Is Roy Steele still the PA guy at the Coliseum?

I remember as a kid hearing him introduce the lineups during the '88 World Series on TV and thinking what a great voice! He actually reminded me of the Lakers longtime PA guy, Laurence Tanter, only better.

Anyway a few years back I'm watching the '73 world series on espn classic and noticed that it was the same guy. Then a couple of years back I was watching an A's game and again heard him at the mic.

Just wondering if (A) he's still there, and (B), has he been the PA announcer since the A's moved from KC?

If so, You guys are lucky. He's one of the best PA guys I've ever heard, and I'm sure he sounds even better in person.

    Thanks

    Yep!

He is known as "The Voice of God." (he was a minister before he was an announcer) Roy has been with the them since 1968 and did move with the A's from KC. He's now 72 years old and is still the best announcer in all of baseball....

    Great question, Elvis!

I was watching the A's vs M's opening day game in 2003, and when Roy announced Brett Boone's name for the starting line-ups, he called him "BERT" Boone... The look on Brett's face was priceless...

To a New Yorker "the voice of God " is Bob Sheppard, who has been at Yankee Stadium since 1950.
Once a few years ago, the Yanks were in San Diego for an Interleague series. I went to the first game and got a wonderful thrill. On hand to announce the Yankee lineup at Jack Murphy Stadium that night was Sheppard. That wonderful voice brought back some wonderful childhood memories.
Earlier this year Sheppard was sidelined due to illness, missing his first home opener at the Stadium for the first time in 56 years. I know Yankee fans are glad it wasn't permanent.
I think it's great that Oakland has a PA announcer as highly thought of out here in CA as Sheppard is in NY>

Welcome back ARod. Hope you are a Yankee forever.

found this on an A's site: June 12th

Sorry to bug you with a non-baseball question, but do you have any updates on [longtime A's public-address announcer] Roy Steele? I know he's not well, but I haven't heard what's wrong with him or when we'll have him back ?

Based on the number of people from whom I've gotten this question lately, it's pretty clear that the late, great Bill King's voice isn't the only one fans are missing this year. I wish I had better news for you, but it doesn't look like Mr. Steele is going to be back anytime soon.

According to an A's spokesman who was pretty vague about it, Steele has a throat ailment that prevents him from performing his PA duties, and there's no timetable for his return.
