Oakland and Texas figure to be second division clubs, although Oakland is pounding teams in Arizona. The AL East should be tougher with the on paper improvement of Toronto and Tampa, which should send the wild card to the Central or the West.

In this do or die season, it appears that that Mac and the boys won't take a flyer on a youngster and Mac will again trot the same eight guys out there everyday. He is stuck on veterans, I'm sorry to say, even though the young guys in the outfield would provide better defense.

Again, the question is how long will Mac go with Ibanez and Sexson when they stall, cough, and sputter early on this year ? Sexson is again hitting in the low 2's and who knows with Ibanez. In Ibanez's defense in the field, he may not get to all the balls that a speed guy could, but he keeps it in front of himself, he throws to the correct base and he has an accurate arm.

--From what I've heard Reed stands a better chance of being released than making the club. I wouldn't be in favor of that, but he isn't what we need as a backup outfielder this year. If he hit righthanded then maybe. He should be playing everyday in Tacoma to be ready if Ibanez or Wilkerson get hurt (or just suck) or - God forbid - Ichiro goes down.

Seems pretty sure that he's going to AAA.

          Thanks for the link.

Jimerson, who is out of options, has only (18) AB's at the time of this article and Reed with only (13) AB's. Morse (31) and Balentien (34) have twice as many AB's.

Cairo, who can play anywhere and Norton, the big time PH'er appear to be making the club.

"He knows how to pinch hit, which is big," the manager said. "You can't just have a guy and say, 'OK, you're a bench player and you're going to pinch hit now.' Sometimes, guys are specialists in that."

--Cairo is an older, slower Willie Bloomqusit. Its hard to see how he makes the bench better, although I agree he seems likely to make the team. I don't know that I'd call Norton a big time PHer either. He does have alot of experience sitting on the bench though:gt.

Norton has been one of the premier pinch-hitters in baseball since 2001, ranking among all Major League pinch-hitters in extra base hits (second with 27), home runs (tied for third with 10), RBIs (tied for fourth with 46) and hits (sixth with 63). With the Colorado Rockies in 2003, Norton led the Majors in pinch-hits (23) and RBIs (17).
"He knows how to pinch-hit, which is huge," McLaren said. "You can't just put a guy on the bench and say, 'Go be a pinch-hitter.' It's usually not a job for a young player."

--Basically Norton had one flukishly good year as a PHer for the Rockies 5 years ago. Take that season out and his totals for 6 years as a "big time PHer" are 40 hits and 29 RBI. So we can expect maybe 6-7 hits and 5 RBI if he has his usual level of performance - and he isn't getting any younger. I don't have a big problem with Norton sitting on the end of the bench, but I hardly see him as our ace in the hole either.

I've never been a fan of Reed's. No power, adequate speed, and an average fielder at best. I couldn't believe that he started so many games in CF when he was up before. I know he was a big prospect for Minnesota (I think it was Minnesota), but he always struck me as an average to below average talent.

I've watched him play in Tacoma a bit, and got to watch him get thrown out arguing balls/strikes last year. Sure enough, bottom of the 9th inning, bases loaded, and it would have been his spot in the order. Tacoma lost.

I like Balentien's power even though his fielding is a little shaky. And I'll be interested to see if they convert Clement to a first baseman when Richie leaves this year, or if he's injured. I like Clement a lot too, but don't see him catching in the majors (he seems too big).

                    typical M's fan...a guy has to have ruthian numbers or he's a bum....he's a pinch hitter okay....sheesh....
