  • Well, the first game of the M's 2011 season is in the books with a Win over the Oakland Athletics!!!

Ichiro did his part at the top of the order, reaching base 4 times (2 hits, 1 walk and once on an error), stole 2 bases, the second as part of a successful double steal with Figgins (something I hope to see a lot this season). He scored the M's first run of the season and later added his first RBI of the season!

The team as a whole did very well tonight, giving many hope for the season ahead. They had a total of 8 hits but added 7 walks as well - it shows greatly that we have some new patient hitters in the middle of our lineup. Ichiro, Bradley, Smoak and Ryan each had a walk and Cust who though hitless, got on base three times via the walk as well!

Langerhans was the sole M's hitter to not reach base by a hit or a walk tonight, also striking out 4 times, half of Cahill's total for the night.

Then we get to the King, the one and only Felix Hernandez! Despite the early high pitch count (38 over the first 2 innings!), he is left in for the complete game win. He threw 108 pitches, 73 for strikes. His only mistake came in the 1st inning when he gave up 2 hits, one a HR. After that, he shut them down for the rest of the game, including striking out the last 2 hitters to end the game!

The game was not perfect, Felix showed some jitters early (which he clearly corrected) and the team could not score runs early, leaving several on base over the first few innings, despite loading the bases on a couple of occassions. But they did not get demoralized; they took their pitches, worked the counts, drew their walks and got the starter out of their early. Then they feasted on the Bullpen, all 5 of them that were put into the game!

This bodes well for the rest of the series as our bullpen is as of yet unworked and unseen while we made the A's show us a handful of what they have to offer (and I liked the results we got from them!).

    • Congrats to Ichiro for his 2248th hit as a Mariner; this gives him the all-time team lead for hits, passing M's great and former teammate, Edgar Martinez!

Ichiro looks to record his 11th straight 200+ hit season, which would give him a couple new records. One for the 11 straight seasons and one for most 200+ hit seasons total, giving him the sole ownership of this title (which he currently shares with Pete Rose).

      • Here is a great article about Ichiro breaking Edgar's hits record:

        http://seattle.mariners.mlb.com/news...s_sea&c_id=sea

Ichiro now has 5 hits in his first 3 games, putting him at a measly 195 hits away from 200. That means he needs to average 1.226 hits/game for the next 159 games, something he can definitely do. He has averaged 1.414 hits/game for his 11 year career and averaged 1.321 hits/game last year and 1.541 hits/game the year before.

May be a little early to set the tracker but I am just excited for Ichiro and the Mariners and the 2011 season!

        • Well, that is 2250 hits now for Ichiro, as he doubles in his 3rd AB of the night!

He now has a 10 game hitting streak dating back to last year (6 games in 2010 and now 4 games here in 2011)!

          • The M's lose tonight but Ichiro did have a 3 hit night including a double. He currently has 28 hits on the season, is hitting .304 and is on pace for 206 hits!

            • Check out the consistency for Ichiro in Home vs. Away splits for his career - it's pretty fascinating:

              HOME: .332 AVG, 532 R, 1121 H, 36 3B, 48 HR, 279 RBI, 199 SB, 234 BB, 349 K, .809 OPS
              AWAY: .329 AVG, 525 R, 1151 H, 35 3B, 42 HR, 288 RBI, 191 SB, 230 BB, 340 K, .800 OPS
Swing and a drive! This one is deep! This one is... over the fence and into the neighbor's yard!

              • Another loss for the M's but a decent day for Ichiro who goes 2-5 with a run and a SB, his 8th of the season. He is currently hitting .309.

                • Ichiro is sitting on a 6 game hit streak, including multi-hit games in 5 out of 6!

He has raised his BA from .250 to .313 in the past 9 games! Way to go! He currently has the league lead in hits with 35 (though the day is still young) and is on pace for 218!

                  • 2-4 today in the M's win. He scored 2 of the Mariner's 5 runs! Ichiro now has a 7 game hitting streak going!

He now has a league leading 37 hits to date, putting him on pace for 221!

He has been hitting .438 over his 7-game hit streak and .432 over the past 10 games, raising his BA from .250 to it's current level of .319!

                    • Not a bad April for Ichiro if I do say so myself! A step above his Career Averages for this month. He usually averages a .301 BA and here he is batting .428 with an 8 game hitting streak!

He ended the month with a 2-3 day with 2 walks and 2 SB's, bringing his season total to 10 SB's and his career totals to 393. So he is nearing another milestone (400 SB's).

May is historically his best month with a .363 BA, so let's hope he can pick it up into the new month, hopefully continue his hitting streak as long as possible.

                      • I see that Ichiro is heating up again. He's up to .328 for the season which is just a stone's throw from his lifetime average of .331. Will this be a low Ichiro year .315 or less, an Average one a few points above or below his current career average, or will he have a really great year and hit above.350 and tack on a few career batting average points. I'd like to see him finish his American career with over 3,000 hits and hitting .335 or so, definitely better than a pure 1 for 3 (.33333......). I believe he's up there in the same category as Tony Gwynn, whose .338 career average was the best by any player since Ted Williams.
In addition, Ichiro and Johnny Damon both have about 390 stolen bases and seem to be in a race to be the next player to reach 400 steals. This is very significant since in the 66 seasons after World War Two (1946-2011) only 30 players have reached the 400 SB milestone.

                        • It's too bad about his "sun triple" escapade yesterday. D'oh. :/

                          • Another multi-hit game for Ichi and he is up to 42 (in 32 games), putting him on pace for 213. He is still 2nd in the league because Young did get a hit tonight.

Oh, and the M's win their 2nd game against the Texas Rangers to win the series. They now have won 7 of their last 9 games and have won 3 consecutive series!
