The season even hasn't started yet...

Although I must say the the ST results so far are quite good.

Because there is no separate ST thread, I will pose my question here.

Tonight Sonnanstine got the save. The other day he got an H.

I know that Maddon said that Andy would fight for one of the two open spots in the rotation. Let's say he will not make it. Does anybody know if he will be in the bullpen then?

Unless Andy S. just falls apart completely in the spring, he's the 4th (or 5th) starter.

He showed last year that he can compete in the majors. Since Rays' management keeps repeating that a player's previous performance will be much more important than their performance in the spring when they decide on where they will start the season, I don't see how they could drop Sonny from the rotation.

It looks like Kaz is going to be out for much longer then the Rays first led
us to believe. That means we now have BOTH Jackson and Hammel in the
rotation. With those two guys starting the bullpen is once again going to
be called on very early in games putting alot of stress on the relievers.
I had hoped for a .500 season but now think that 70 to 75 wins is the best
          we can hope for.

I thought Kazmir coming back during the second week of the season? At least, that's what he's on track for at the moment.

Here is manager Maddon's comments regarding Kaz as stated on March 23rd.

Maddon said ace LHP Scott Kazmir is getting better but remains limited to playing catch. Though there's no timetable for him to return to the mound, Maddon said he could have some answers today.

It sounds to me like the Rays have no idea when he will be ready to pitch again.

Well, Kazmir's been pushed fairly hard, at a very young age, mostly due to a lack of alternatives. You'd like to hope he comes back none the worse for wear, both because he's been the one bright beacon of hope for Rays and for the league's sake -- the league is always stronger when it's one true ace richer.

Buuuut... fastball-slider lefties aren't exactly the most likely of arms to survive consistent abuse. Sliders are apparently very rough on the elbow. It's even gotten to Johan Santana from time to time and Santana started working as a true horse at an older age than Kazmir did.

Unfortunately, one of the TRUE biggest disadvantages of being a big market is that you can't build nearly as much institutional depth -- when crap like this hits the fan there isn't a whole lot you can do about it.

Let's hope for a speedy recovery for Kazmir's sake, for the league's sake, and because he owns the two teams that the Rays need most badly to match up well against.

Back to YankeeBuiscit Fan, with Kaz on the shelf, the rotation lines up out of the gate as: Shields, Garza, Sonnanstine, Jackson/Hammel. JP Howell is the long man, Reyes, Wheeler, Percival in the bully, and Dohman and Balfour fighting it out for the last spot.

It's official: Longo to the minors. Not surprising, but disappointing nonetheless. In defense of the move, his BA had slipped to .260-something after a hot start. However, he was still walking plenty, hitting for power, and playing solid-to-spectacular 3B.

Between this and Kaz being on the shelf to start the season, I'm thinking that we may see the same ol' Rays through the month of April unless some of the other starting pitchers perform over their heads.

Oops, I didn't see this post prior to starting a new thread. Sorry guys.

                          bttt

                          Opening day is tomorrow!

With Kaz out, I've revised my expectations down to 80-85 wins. We'll see...

With Kaz out, Longoria in the minors possibly for a long time, the shaky
platoon in RF and a questionable bullpen still be to tested under fire I've
lowered my estimate to 75 wins.

Well, two more outs and you (we, yes I have a soft spot for the Rays) will have the first win.
