  • Doug Mathis non-tendered

The Texas Rangers declined to offer RHP Doug Mathis a major league contract Friday, making him a free agent. The club still hopes to sign Mathis as a minor league free agent.

Mathis, 25, was 2-1 with a 6.85 ERA last year in eight appearances for the Rangers. He ended the season unable to pitch because of shoulder issues.

The Texas Rangers announced today that the club has re-signed right-handed pitcher Doug Mathis to a minor league contract with an invitation to major league spring training.

Mathis, 25, went 2-1 with a 6.85 ERA in 8 games/4 starts in his major league debut for the Rangers in 2008. He spent just over a month with the Rangers before having his season cut short with right shoulder inflammation. He also went 5-1 with a 3.35 ERA (20 ER/53.2 IP) in 10 games/starts for Oklahoma

(AAA). Originally selected by Texas in the 13th round of the 2005 June draft, this season was Mathis’ 4th as a professional.

With this transaction, the Rangers still have 39 players on the club’s 40-man roster.
