  • Blue Jays Sign Machi

TORONTO -- The Blue Jays signed pitcher Jean Machi to a Major League contract on Tuesday. The 23-year-old right-hander was declared a Minor League free agent on Oct. 15.
Machi spent the 2006 season with the Montgomery Biscuits -- Tampa Bay's Double-A affiliate. In 49 appearances, he went 6-1 with a 2.64 ERA and 16 saves. Machi, who is from El Tigre, Venezuela, struck out 68 and walked 37 over 71 2/3 innings.

The Phillies originally signed Machi as a free agent in 2000, but the Devil Rays picked up the 6-foot, 170-pound righty in the Rule 5 Draft on Dec. 13, 2004. Machi is currently pitching for Navegantes del Magallanes in the Venezuelan Winter League, where he is 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA in six games.

Machi will be added to Toronto's 40-man roster, which currently holds 39 players.
