  • Deal the good Doctor?

In any circumstance would you, the hypothetical GM of the Blue Jays, trade Roy Halladay? Vote, and then go on to read the comments.

I would. If a good package of ML-ready young talent came along, I'd do it in an instant. Halladay and Lind and a pitching prospect for Joey Votto, Edison Volquez and Adam Dunn (with a window to negotiate an extension) would do it for me.

I don't agree. IMO, Halladay is the only one on the team that we can count on right now. I'm not against a big move by JP, but without Halladay, there wouldn't even be a team. Halladay is the leader of the staff and one of the most dependable aces in the majors.

The problem with the offense isn't on paper, it's with the team. The only thing I think might help is to get a new manager.

No. Roy Halladay is one of the best pitchers in the game right now. The Jays have an abundance of good young pitchers right now, but none of them have the potential to be franchise pitchers or aces. With the ridiculous prices of free agent pitching, it could be years before the Blue Jays have another pitcher equal to Roy Halladay. I could see them doing it if they were in need of young cornerstone players, but that is just not the case. They still have Wells, Rios, and Halladay as the cornerstones with a supporting cast of very good players. Unfortunately, they're not playing well right now, the but the talent is there. If they were in a situation where it was a team void of talent without Rios and with a 34 or 35 year old Vernon Wells, then I would say make a move with Halladay, but not right now.

I may just be over-reacting. It just baffles me how we can have talented players at so many positions (CF, RF, 2B, 3B, SP) and yet struggle so mightily. :grouchy

I strongly disagree. Halladay is the one horse the Blue Jays should ride to the very end. How will you get equal value for Doc if you trade him? You can't. If anything, you need to build around him (the right way of course) and a few others. Roy Halladay is Mr. Toronto Blue Jay right now.

A strong supporting cast is what the Jays lack right now. They have enough star talent, now they need the sidekicks, so to speak.

I'd trade him in a minute for a manager and general manager with the slightest amount of baseball nous. Other than that, there aren't too many more talented ballplayers than the Doc.

I said no, but in truth if offered the right deal I would do it. But it has to be a deal that knocks your socks off because Halladay is a stud camel.

No way. Unless the team goes in the tank for an extended period of time (ie 3 straight last place seasons) and he asked to be traded to a contender. Which I don't think he'd do anyways - but in this day and age, you never know...

It's so hard to find pitchers like Halladay in this day and age. It's next to impossible to draft a stud pitcher and keep him right through his prime. Too many times, teams draft potential aces who take off in free agency for huge contracts after a couple of seasons with the team that brought them through their system. Halladay is one of the few who is committed to the only team he's ever known. Nothing can replace what Roy Halladay is to the team.

Unless the Mets call and offer Johan Santana, no way should the Jays trade Halladay. I don't care if a team makes an offer of 5 prospects that are the top 5 ranked in the minors. Solid starters, let alone a stud like Halladay, do not grow on trees.

Marcum and McGowan are looking mighty fine though... It's not like our rotation would be terrible without him, I mean. It would probably still rank as one of the top 5 or so in the AL without him. And if it could spark the offense...

You'd still be nuts to do it unless you could bring back a Matt Holliday type hitter to play LF, plus a top catcher and a stud pitcher.

No, and a curse on you for suggesting such a thing. Doc reminds me of Hershiser for the 88 Dodgers - reliable, strong, pitch out of jams, willing to relieve and destined for a future career in the booth. If he can win us a Series as well then he will be Mr Blue Jay

Hah, keep dreaming. No way are you going to get Votto and Volquez. If you were looking at a more realistic trade with the Reds involving Halladay, it would probably get the Jays Harang, Arroyo, and Dunn for at least Halladay, Burnett and a minor league prospect.

In terms of the trade, it's always open. Yes a guy like Halladay doesn't come around very often, but that's even more incentive to trade him. Once his contract is up, he's a $20 million per year type of pitcher and no way can the Jays keep him and also hold onto guys like Marcum and McGowen in the future. The only way the Jays could hold him is if he takes another hometown discount.

Just look at the last contract he signed. he could have gotten a lot more than he did. I have a feeling the next contract he signs will be a bargain for the Blue Jays in comparison the ridiculous contracts of his peers.
