  • If an expansion draft happened...

According to the rules that for the first round, 15 players from the rosters of the entire organization (both their 40-man roster plus all minor league affiliates) could be protected and you can add three more players to its protected list after each round (3 rounds total), which players would you proect each round?

Hmmm... here are the 15 I would protect off our 40man to start:

    Pitchers
    Halladay
    Marcum
    McGowan
    Purcey
    Ryan
    Litsch
    Downs
    R. Romero
    Janssen

    Players
    Wells
    Rios
    Hill
    Snider
    Lind
    Thigpen

I don't know what I'd do for the following rounds.

For my 15, I'll go with

      Pitchers:
      Roy Halladay
      Shaun Marcum
      Dustin McGowen
      David Purcey
      Scott Downs
      Jeremy Accardo
      BJ Ryan
      Brett Cecil
      Brandon League

      Position players:
      Travis Snider
      Adam Lind
      Alex Rios
      Aaron Hill
      JP Arencibia
      David Cooper

      My next 3 would be:
Vernon Wells (didn't put him up there because we could shed his 20 million per year and have enough outfielders to replace him)
      Justin Jackson
      Jesse Carlson

      My final 3 would be:
      Ricky Romero
      Kevin Ahrens
Casey Janssen (he may never return to form)

For the past two expansion drafts (Rockies/Marlins, D-backs/Rays), each organization protected 15 players (10 and 5 players -10 years MLB service, the last five with the current team- HAD to be protected) from their 40 man roster, then 3 more after Rounds 1 and 2. Guys like J.P. Arencibia, for example, would be exempt from the draft.
Just for fun (and to make it more challenging), though, bypassing this 40 man roster-only rule, here's the 15 I would protect:

        1. R. Halladay
        2. S. Marcum
        3. D. McGowan
        4. B. Cecil
        5. B. League
        6. J.P. Arencibia
        7. D. Cooper
        8. A. Lind
        9. A. Hill
        10. T. Snider
        11. V. Wells
        12. A. Rios
        #'s 13-15 are a toss-up, but I'd pick M. Rzepcynski, B. Mills, J. Jackson.

        R. Romero and K. Ahrens would be ripe for the picking in Round 1.
