  • Prospect Report: Tim Collins

I saw this on tsn so I figured I would share this with you all.

I admit, I have never heard of him up til now myself.

This gave 19-year-old Tim Collins 101 strikeouts on the season, in just 65.2 innings pitched. Go ahead -- I defy you to try and match that strikeout rate on any video game. It simply can't be done...even with the computer set on "Dunce" mode. For comparison's sake, Roy Halladay had 109 strikeouts in his second year in the minors. But he needed almost exactly 100 more innings of work -- 164.2 to be precise -- to get there.

A 12-6 record with 17 saves in two years in the minors...a sparkling career ERA of 1.95...199 strikeouts and only 60 walks -- these are numbers scouts love about Tim Collins.

5'7'' and 155 -- these are numbers scouts hate about Tim Collins.

That's the listed height and weight for the lefty reliever. But, according to Jays insiders that I know and trust, those might both be generous estimates. One team staffer who has seen the pitcher up close told me, "I'd be surprised if he was taller than 5'5"".

"When I arrived here in Florida back in the spring, the driver that picked me up at the airport guessed that I was a middle infielder," says Collins. "I told him I was a pitcher. He said the last guy he picked up was also a pitcher, but he was 6'5". He kind of gave me this look like he didn't believe me."

Collins made his pro debut pitching in the Gulf Coast League in the late summer days of 2007. One official in the Jays minor league system was on hand for it and says members of the Indians Gulf Coast League affiliate were laughing as he came into the game to warm up.

Wow, that's an absolutely incredible story! How could you not root for this guy. Looks like the modern day Billy Wagner, only a little shorter both physically and on the fastball. Great post thanks.

Agree'd, Also from what I have been reading on scouting reports on this kid. He is a legitimate prospect who has really nasty stuff. A knee buckling curve with a fastball that can hit 95mph!

He was recently promoted to AA. Oh and hes only 19!!! His strikeout numbers indicate to me that we might have a special player here. Maybe hes a closer of the future? He probably has the personality for it. Considering he has likely faced adversity his entire career to this point.

P.S. For any of you baseball fans out there, Sign up to this forum. Its all baseball talk! We could use support in the Jays section.

I followed him earlier in the year, maybe a month or more into the season and he had an ERA of like under 1. At that point in time, he wasn't used as a lefty specialist and went out there like a long reliever, though I'm not sure how they're using him now.

Collins to date has pitched 10 2/3rds Innings in AA and has posted 15K's vs 4BB's

However he has also given up 6 ER. His ERA is at a hefty 5.06 but his last game he pitched 2 2/3rd Innings striking out 7 in a row! He looks to be getting used to AA hitters now.
