  • Gaston turns down all-star coaching spot

Toronto Blue Jays manager Cito Gaston has turned down an invitation from New York Yankees counterpart Joe Girardi to coach in next month's all-star game.

Gaston revealed Sunday that Girardi called him Friday with the offer, one he was grateful for but decided not to accept.

"I want to spend that time with my family," said Gaston. "It was nice of him to think of me."

Gaston managed the all-star game twice, in 1993 and '94, and has been two other times, once as a player.

"It is (a tough decision) but sometimes you need those days off," said Gaston. "It's just something where you need get away for a while."
Always nice to see the Jays get some recognition for the great start (since it'll probably just be Yankees and Red Sox getting voted into the all-star game as starters >.<).
