I find it interesting that we are not allowed to discuss politics on the site, but that we get political ads on the site.

I would request from the site owner that this site preclude certain types of ads from this site. Right now the top ad (for me) is "Planned Parenthood" and the bottom one is "Whole Foods Market".

To add on to Savoy's previous post, this site is geared towards baseball and intentionally goes away from other topics. Savoy doesn't appreciate political ads, and a significant portion of the population loathes Planned Parenthood. I've tried to "report" this particular ad and block if from displaying on my computer on this site over 10 times in the last week, but it keeps showing up. It can't be algorithm based on my end because I do not click on Planned Parenthood or related type websites, either contraceptive, abortive, Democratic political or pornographic. Therefore it is based on this site's ad generating mechanism. I extremely desire not to get their ads. I've also gotten many ads for Chinese, Russian and Indonesian brides. Again I do not click or enter those types of web sites or tangential ones.

If possible, please stick to merchandising type ads like Whole Foods Market. Politicizing or sexualizing this website shouldn't be part of it. I'm no web expert, but I think ad content can be limited by the web administrator.

I failed to respond to this thread directly, but I did block the political ads (from all parties) after the second post. I saw your request SavoyBG then got sidetracked with some postseason stats. When I received an email (I don't think it was from you though) about it, I blocked them all.

Out of curiosity, would you be interested in an ad-free version of the site with a flat-rate full-year subscription cost? I've kicked around the idea, but don't want to add the feature if it has no possible subscribers. Second question, if you would be interested, what do you believe would be a fair price?

I think your window to have an effective/profitable pay site for BBF has come and gone. Posting activity is way down (perceived by me as way down anyway) from the days when debates among a LOT of different posters on a lot of different topics would rage, with threads being posted on several times in an hour or so. Lots of once very prolific and high quality posters are no longer with us at all (left the site, died, whatever else) and others rarely post at all now. Plus smart phones have taken the place of PC's and the quality and length of most posts has dropped dramatically in a lot (not all) of cases.

[ I too get oddball ads on the sites I frequent, despite having no interest in Asian or Russian, etc. brides or the Ashley Madison affair site or other things I get shown. I also don't click on such sites ever so no algorithm for me either. But such content or political content (Conservative here) doesn't offend or bother me and I'm not willing to pay to not see it. I can only conclude somewhere along the way the system has deduced me to be a middle aged male and has decided I am part of the profile they want to see their ads for all this garbage.]

Just my two cents worth, others mileage may vary.

So true. The era of sitting at the desktop system and hopping around from this forum to that forum to this forum are gone. Lucky for me, I built this site nearly 20 years ago, just to give serious fans a serious place to talk baseball research. When it went through the phase of discussing Harper vs Machado, I didn't mind, because those interested in research were still here.

We are out of that phase for sure, but it will remain in my mind a nice place for those interested in baseball history to collect and share and discuss baseball. There were still 4,825 people who visited here yesterday, for one reason or another, and we'll evolve!

Toledo, I have no problem at all with political ads. I just think that we should also be allowed to discuss politics here in the forum in an off topic section.

What is your problem with planned parenthood? Many lower income women would not be able to get gynecological services without them. Also mammograms to detect breast cancer. Not to mention birth control. If you are against abortion for whatever misguided reasons, then you should want people to use birth control so they don't have to have abortions.

You can't stop women from having abortions by making them illegal in the USA. You would just make it much more expensive, dangerous and inconvenient for them to get an illegal abortion or to go to Canada or some other place to have them done. A woman has an absolute right to decide what to do about her own body, and the old white men of the Republican party are not gonna be able to stop it.

Abortion in Canada is legal at all stages of pregnancy, and is governed by the Canada Health Act. While some non-legal obstacles exist, Canada is one of only a few nations with no legal restrictions on abortion. Regulations and accessibility vary between provinces.

That's because whenever a debate gets going strong the overreaching moderators come in and cut it short.

Not for me, although I mainly use a laptop. I don't own a smartphone, and the older cell I have remains turned off in my car unless I need to make a call while I am on the road. I use my computer at home much of the day for my mail order business, with frequent breaks to check this and other forums that I frequent.

First, thank you Sean for building this web site. I quite love it, giving hard core baseball fans a chance to discuss baseball. You've done a magnificent job. Sincerely my heartfelt thanks.

I don't mind the ads, I understand the site needs money. I just would prefer to eliminate certain types of web sites. While I would pay to be on this site, I personally think many people would be turned away, especially new users who wouldn't come in that frequently. While we have a strong base of posters, even in my time here, we've dropped somewhat.

I use a real computer, not a phone, but I understand many people use their phones.

                  In terms of my preferences:

                  1) Free site with limited content ads as I described above in post 2
                  2) Free site even with less desirable ads (however, if pornographic ads started showing up, I'd have to leave)
                  3) Pay site, no ads

In any case, I'd still be here, but case 3 would worry me the most.

I'll give a quick answer so not as to test anyone's limits.

I personally think Planned Parenthood is one of the most evil institutions in the history of the world. They are worse than Nazism and Communism...and I had family members killed by both the Nazis and Russian Communists in Poland. The contraceptive and abortive services (and selling of baby parts) are an abomination the likes the world has never seen before. Just because something is legal, doesn't mean it is correct. That's the short version.

I'd be more than happy to continue this discussion in a PM, but let's not get away from baseball here.

Worse than Naziism? That's utterly preposterous. Grow up.

What exactly is wrong with contraception?

So, you would FORCE any woman who got pregnant to give birth?

Selling of baby parts is for medical research, and they only get enough money to cover expenses. Planned Parenthood is not a profit making organization. Maybe you should stop listening to what Fox News says and learn about the great organization that Planned Parenthood is. Without Planned Parenthood and the contraceptives that they provide to millions of lower income people there would be a ton more of the abortions that you have such a problem with.

Its founder, Margaret Sanger publicly condemned abortion, arguing that it would not be needed if every woman had access to birth control.

The services provided by PPFA affiliates vary by location, with just over half of all Planned Parenthood affiliates in the U.S. performing abortions.Services provided by PPFA include birth control and long-acting reversible contraception; emergency contraception; clinical breast examinations; cervical cancer screening; pregnancy testing and pregnancy options counseling; testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections; sex education; vasectomies; LGBT services; and abortion.

In 2013, PPFA reported seeing 2.7 million patients in 4.6 million clinical visits. Roughly 16% of its clients are teenagers. According to PPFA, in 2014 the organization provided 3.6 million contraceptive services, 4.5 million sexually transmitted infection services, about 1 million cancer related services, over 1 million pregnancy tests and prenatal services, over 324,000 abortion services, and over 100,000 other services, for a total of 9.5 million discrete services. PPFA is well known for providing services to minorities and the poor; according to PPFA, approximately four out of five of their clients have incomes at or below 150 percent of the federal poverty level. Services for men's health include STD testing and treatment, vasectomy procedures, and erectile dysfunction services. Education is available regarding male birth control and lowering the risk of sexually transmitted diseases.

An "off-topic" board has been proposed numerous times, but the general consensus is that Baseball Fever needs to remain strictly baseball.

Also, on 4/26/13, Bill Burgess posted: "Webmaster Sean has notified me that the off-topic forum or thread will not be included."

So, unless Sean changes his mind or unless he's presented with a strong enough case to convince him to do so, there will not be an "off-topic" thread here at Baseball Fever.
