  • becoming a mod

How does one go about becoming a mod? Just curious. Thanks.

You're basically asked if people who are existing Mods think well of you. Some have asked others if they could become Mods, but that's generally how it's done.

Since you're a Boston Red Sox fan, there are two existing Mods already--VTSoxFan and FlashGordon.

Don't forget the fact, pretty much alluded to with the mention of the Boston mods, there needs to be an opening for a moderator before someone is approached. Becoming a moderator is very much about the right fit in regards to forums.

So CCN by an opening do you mean a forum with only 1 moderator? or a forum in which there is no moderator and just The Commisioner is listed as the moderator?

If a forum has one Mod other than "The Commissioner", who is the default Mod if no regular Mod is there, then it all depends upon how heavily trafficked that forum is. It all depends upon whether that forum is already being handled fully.

In the case of Trivia, we have one single Mod, who does a very good job by himself, especially due to his extensive knowledge of baseball history, including as it relates to trivia. In the case of the Brooklyn Dodger forum, we have "Dodger Deb", which is unique, in that she's not only excellent, but she's a Brooklyn Dodger fan from many years ago, when they were still an active team in Brooklyn. That being a team from yesteryear, this criteria is extremely important in her case, as is the expected discretion (which we all use) on her part.

In the cases of the Red Sox, Yankees, Cubs, White Sox and Expos, they all have two Mods. Some other forums have one, and the existing Mod is handling this properly.

Simply put, just post into the various forums that interest you. If your posts are deemed to be high enough in quality, your overall temperament and approach to people is found to be mature and responsible, then you may be asked. No guarantees, but those are amongst the criteria.

How well you get along with other Mods here would also be counted, especially the existing Mod of the forum you're interested in, since we do like to work well with one another in a peaceful and constructive manner. As you're a Braves fan, the sole Mod there is "Atlanta Braves Freak".

A strong interest in the quality, direction and betterment of BBF as a whole would also be required, without question.

That's all I can think of at the moment.

You're welcome. You caught me editing, so please re-read the entire last post.

Just be a good forumer, use discretion, be kind to people and treat others in the exact same respectful way you'd like to be treated in person.

We're all trying to be good to each other here, as it's also a community forum. Everything here is rated PG, so no "locker room" talk. Very important part.

Mattingly did a pretty good job telling you about how mods are chosen.

I can tell you that the Mods on this board take notice of all posters. The good ones and the bad ones. We talk amongst ourselves and throw names around of members we feel could become quality mods.

Bottom line is if you become a commited member of BF, post in a kind and truthful manner, your name will be mentioned as a possible canidate. But like Mattingly said, no guarantees. It all depends on openings. The only reason I became a mod, was because our old Expos Mods, called it quits after the team left.

Also becoming a mod doesnt happen over night. I was just appointed Moderator last months. It was well over 2 years before I got named.

Frankly, my advice to you is enjoy BF and try and bring something to it. If you do that, only good things can come from it.

                  Great additions, OG!

One more thing I'd forgotten to add: don't go posting looking to become a Mod. Just post, enlighten and add to the conversation, rather than worrying about whether the next post will impress anyone.

Be yourself, be kind, be helpful, be an excellent "baseball citizen".

De nada. I'm sure you'll be an excellent forumer here.

The Cap'n helped out some also.

Only at the beginning. It wasn't because I was ignoring Bravos, i just hadn't logged on over the weekend as I am apt to do.
That was a good example of how mods look out for each other. A moderator needs to be a team player, watching out not just in their own forums but on the site in general. There's a reason why not much gets by and sticks around that doesn't follow site rules.

Hey, you contributed so just posting credit where due.

You're right, being a team player is very important. Even if someone just pops into a forum to post, if something unwarranted is occuring, then that being a portion of BBF would need attention.

Of course, our job is made easier when the greater number of regular forumers also alert us to things they find "non-Kosher", so any help on their part benefits the community as a whole, I'd say.

Yeah, I've been working my way up to being a brave's mod. I study baseball hours a day. Funnny thing is that I'm only 11 years old and I know a lot more about baseball than anybody age. Maybe I'll be a mod somewhere around next year, maybe I'll never become one, but that's all right.

Knowledge is only one facet of being a moderator, though. How to handle people and handling situations where your duties are called upon are of the utmost importance. A little level-headedness goes a long way toward getting respect from other members. Just as much as knowing Nap Lajoie's OPS+ in 1906.
The only advice I can give you is to not prepare or plan on being a moderator. Just be the best poster you can and if it happens, it happens.
