    I suppose it depends on how you define "sporting event". Professional baseball predates 1874, and amateur baseball is older yet. But if a "sporting event" is a regularly held named occasion, then the Kentucky Derby is arguably older than any baseball event. I don't know the history well enough, but were I inclined to seek an older event I would look to yachting or crew regattas.

    I thought the same thing when I saw that commercial. I suppose opening day is older and Cubs v. Braves series every year. Not any other marquee baseball event tho.

    I recently watched a video online where the commentator stated that, "The Kentucky Derby is steeped in tradition as the longest running sporting event in the United States." The first Kentucky Derby race took place in 1874 but I thought baseball in America had been around much longer than that.
