  • College Wood Bats?

Do any colleges in the United States participate in wood bat leagues?

  • #2
NCAA endorsed college summer leagues use wood bats. It helps the scouts figure out who the real prospects are.

Last year a player in the SEC hit about .360 with 20 homers. He was drafted in the 10th round. When he didn't come to terms he went to play in the Cape Cod League where he proceeded to hit .140 with a wood bat. Do you think he hurt is signing value? He's back in college for his senior year now.

I know that the chances of a college player making it to the Majors is astronomical, but wouldn't it be time saving and in the economic interest of Major League teams to sponsor wood bat tournaments for the cream of the crop college prospects to weed out the elite hitters? By the same token, for teams who scout High Schools, wouldn't there be some interest in the New York High Schools this year, now that they've gone to wood bats?

The top 18U showcase events are wood bat. The better college summer leagues are wood bat. Many 16U and 18U travel programs are now wood bat.

The entire Northeast Division II is going wood bat this year. This includes the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference. A lot of these schools are in the New Jersey/New York/Pennslyvania area.

They used metal during the regular season, however all the teams in the post season tournament agreed to use wood.
