  • Knuckle Ball

I want to learn how to throw a knuckle ball and am looking for videos or tips on how to throw it. It would be pretty cool if I could master this pitch because I would be the only one who knows how to throw it among my team. Any knuckleballers out there who can pass on their wisdom or guys who can find videos for me?

I don't know about any videos, but I started throwing a knuckle ball when i was 11 years old and now I have a killer knuckleball. I would suggest starting out gripping it with your nails and just throw it like a fastball (of course slower)

I never had anyone teach me how to throw it, but watching videos of tim wakefield and other knuckleballers helped me with mechanics.

Use three fingers or two fingers, and hold it four seam grip?

I always used a four finger grip with the nails dug into the seam when I threw it as a kid.

Google "knuckleball video" and all kinds of interesting stuff comes up, including videos of Tim Wakefield and Phil Niekro throwing the knuckler. There's even a site devoted to it which has an instruction book for sale:

I finally found a grip that works for me. I put ring, middle, and index finger knuckles on the plane off the ball between the seams. That seems to work for me and I got movement from it on my first day of throwing it. Thanks for all the help!
