  • How can I get noticed?

I am a senior in my high school. I am one of if not the best pitcher on the team. My team however is less then spectacular. We are 2-8 so far. Last year i was not even on varsity. I have gained 10 or so mph on my fastball and throw mid 80's. My record as a pitcher is 0-3. The majority of the runs scored are not earned though. How can I get noticed by anyone? It doesn't help that I go to a small 2A school.

You need to get down to one of the showcase's they have in Denver. Call coach Marc Johnson of Cherry Creek High School in Colorado. If anyone knows it would be him. They have showcases at Slammers in Aurora from time to time.

A showcase is when scouts (either college or pro) come out and look at high school kids. Most of the time you have to be invited. But if you can reach 85 mph, they will look at you. That is the speed where you can get some attention. When I was in school, it was 80 mph.

Call him and leave a message if you have to. Dont lie to him either. If you cant throw mid 80's for at least 4 innings with control you are wasting everyones time.

If is truly a dream of yours, you will pursue it. I have given you enough info to take the next step. the ball is in your court.

I am not exactly sure how fast I throw. I know it is over 80 but I don't know how much faster. Do you have a number where I can call Mr. Johnson? Do you know when these showcases are usually held? If I threw between 80-85 would they still look at me? Do other pitches play into that?

Since you have internet, look up Cherry Creek High School and you should find a link to the baseball team or someone who can get you his information.
Be patient since he is busy. He may take some time to get back to you.

Someone up there in Cheyenne or Laramie has a radar gun that can verify your speed. Their will be a lot of them at the state playoffs for Wyoming. Especially the larger schools games. Your coach should have some contacts as well. you have to do a lot of the ground work yourself.

Just fyi my name is Laramie. Kind of an odd name but I live in Indiana. Are try-outs ever held by minor league teams?

Curtzilla is on the right trail. Your coaches may be able to help you with colleges he has a relationship with but MANY many players get noticed by going to certain showcases. If my son is so inclined and has the capabilities I'll take him to some small ones as a sophomore and to larger ones as a junior. The sophomore ones are to give him a small taste of reality and to get him used to what does on there.

At times. What happens more is that invites are made to come play against some minor league guys to see what happens. I did that and it was when I found out I wasn't as good as I thought I was.

How much does size play into it for a pitcher. I am only about 5'7". I weight about 140 at best. I am not the biggest guy.

You don't have to be invited to most showcases. Go to the Perfect Game website. There are also showcases run by colleges. They tend to invite college coaches from lower levels who can't steal their propsects. But you get expsoure to lower level schools if the school running the showcase is out of your reach talentwise.

Last year I watched a showcase. There were only four players capable of playing at the level of the school running it. But there were other lower level colleges interested in some of the players.

If you're 5'7", 140 and throw 80 look into middle to low level D3's.

Will D2 and D1 schools not be interested in me because of my size? Is that just because of velocity or is there something else about being short that turns them away?

In D2 you usually need to hit 85/cruise 83 on the gun with good movement. In D1 you need to hit 90/cruise 87 with good movement. Your size will be an obstacle. But if you're good enough it won't matter.

I know a guy who goes to Buffalo (D1) who's under 6 ft. and throws 87 tops. He's a lefty though, with pretty nice junk.
