  • Bat Throwing-Little League Rules

We had a situation at my son's game (11 and 12 Y.O.) last Saturday that I'm a bit confused about and was hoping for some possible explanations from the experts here.....My son's team was down 8-2 going into the last inning.......they made a comeback and my son came up with two out and bases loaded and the score was now 8-7......he hit one into the gap in right center that went all the way to the fence which scored three runs and as my son was rounding third and heading home the umpire pointed to him and said he was out for throwing his bat after he hit the ball and none of the runs counted and the game was over......I looked at home plate and saw his bat about two feet to the right of the plate in foul territory.....there is no particular rule governing this in our leagues rulebook which just mentions that all other 2012 LL rules shall apply. What exactly is the rule? Is this strictly a judgement call as to what constitues throwing the bat? I can't find any particular rule...he's devastated because he feels he cost his team the game. I feel if there is is such a rule the umpire should have called him out immediately instead of letting the play go on. Any advice or comments?

You won't find one because there isn't a rule that covers it. Technically, about the only thing an umpire could do is eject the player because of safety. It would take more than one thrown bat to cause this to happen. But like you, every league I've ever come across has the team bat warning then out on the next thrown bat.

I would take this post to the baseball 101 section of this forum. You'll find the "ask the umpire" thread. Just ask it in there and a few people will weigh in on it.

If no warning was given can't see why they would have called him out/ejected.
We had a kid in league last year that let go of bat EVERY time he hit the ball, 1 warning then he was gone every game. My kid was warned a couple times about flicking the bat after hits.
They need to use some common sense with these grey area rules. If it didn't cause interference or could cause injury let it go or give warning. And yes he should have called him out immediately, but I've seen them let the play go then call the batter out for bat tossing. Tell your son sometimes bad things happen even when you follow the rules, he'll get them next time.

Sounds like there is more to the story tph?

Other thrown bats earlier in the game? Communication from umpires and coaches on the matter in prior innings? You were probably following the flight of the ball like everyone else and noticed where the bat ended up... But is that where the batter truly put the bat after contact?
"Herman Franks to Sal Yvars to Bobby Thomson. Ralph Branca to Bobby Thomson to Helen Rita... cue Russ Hodges."

As far as I know there where no warnings (that doesn't mean there weren't).........and yes, I looked at the where the bat was after my son was called out.....I do know the next week we had another situation with bat throwing...this time the other team...the ump had met with the coaches before the game and explained that there would be one warning per team after that the player would be called out.....well sure enough it happened and the umpire immediately called the kid out and sent the runners back to their respective bases.....I can live with any rule as long as there's clarity
