    • what's that behind uncle harmie's head?
almost looks like a pitchers mound (for warm-ups)?
but that can't be, can it?
why would a pile of soil be placed in that part of the warning track?
would think that the catchers would object.
could not find anything like this in any other met pix.

It apears that there are pitching mounds next to the dugouts in this pic.

I see great things in baseball. It's our game - the American game.

                  • Love the cantilevered light support brace trussing up on the roof. So odd. So cool.

                    • those two light banks always looked closer (forward) to the infield than most places, always wondered why they went to the trouble/expense to cantilever the supports. Could be because aside from the free-standing towers just beyond the original grandstand there's no more lighting fixtures until well into the outfield? With the lack of corner lighting the throw distance had to be shortened to compensate for possible dark areas when it was a minors park?

Other late 50's parks with generally similar layouts like dodgers the light towers were farther back but had more banks spread out towards the corners. Eventually the 1st & 3rd towers were pushed back and the foot candle output was upgraded as well as extra light banks in the outfield.

anyone who was there at night ever notice dark areas down the foul lines?

                      • YES, but also notice the very same lighting structures on the roof of CYS, specifically the outfield.

                        • The extended lights above the third deck were made that way to accommodate a planned roof, similar to the ones at Milwaukee County Stadium and Kansas City Municipal Stadium but cantilevered, extending partially over the third deck. Skyboxes hanging from said roof were also planned.

seems like an odd concept, even for a minor league structure with mlb aspiriations in the mid 50's. you'd think that the upper deck would have been engineered a little higher so boxes could have been added hanging below the 1st row like as many others of the time.

looks like the roof extends beyond the front of the light banks, would this have led to the only access to a rather shadow-darkened upper deck seating thru the portals? guess that the press box would have been part of this also?
