  • Dream Stadium

(I don't believe I remember seeing a thread like this before)

The year is 2050. No, make it 2100. HoK has died off as owners and fans got sick of those early 21st century cookie cutters. The New York Yankees have come to you and asked your architecture firm to design Yankee Stadium III. They are giving you an almost unlimited budget to play with, and the goal is to make the greatest, most attracting, most technological stadium possible. They want to redo Yankee Stadium, and this time do it right.

In other words, what amazing technological advancements do you see with baseball stadiums? Think of it as a concept car. It is filled with all kinds of expensive crap that you will never see on the market but would be amazing if ever in use. Describe a concept stadium. Don't give generic stuff like, an extra extra large jumbotron. Like i'm not looking for improvements, but new stuff. Remember when Shea Stadium was built, and they tried to have like a projector on their scoreboard but it didn't work very well? Or Montreal and the 1st version of the retractible roof.

being the one posting this, I should come up with something myself, but, I can't really think of anything right now It would be cool to see different fields. I mean, it wouldn't be baseball - I only like baseball on dirt and grass, but how about dark blue astro turf, but not astroturf, something else, like an odd soft floor, that has blades of fake grass. How about black dirt? I don't know - this isn't really what I want to be talking about (changing the playing surface) I'm looking for stuff more like Montreal with the retractible roof, the ideas of retractible surfaces, ect. One of my favorite ideas, is in a fasntasy park in ASB 2005. One of the parks feature a plexiglass wall, which allows fans to be closer to the action without adjusting the walls - box seats in the outfield. The whole outfield wall could be wrapped plexiglass so you wouldn't really notice it from the field, but you could have lux. boxes right behind it.

    So any ideas?

    hok haters

I'm in agreement with the disappointment leveled at HOK's recent MLB portfolio. (I've also been guilty of blaming them, in retrospect probably wrongfully). Based on viewing their work that isn't produced for MLB owners, I think it may be more realistic to say that they are simply delivering what the client wants. So I think until we get some forward thinking owners (happening somewhat in DC & florida), and forward thinking public that would support radical proposals, lets at least recognize that hok isn't acting independently.

No, I know that - HoK has done great for Baseball. They have built great ballparks, but the new park and DC, Yankee Stadium and Citi Field - it's like cookie cutters of a different form all over again. I mean, the mets are going to play with green seats?!! I like the stuff Oakland is doing with their new ballpark & Tampa. Oakland isn't HoK, and I don't believe Tampa is either.

If location and money was no object, how about a Pac Bell clone sitting in Battery Park with the Statue of Liberty in view of right field.

Yea, something under those lines would be nice. You know what I always thought would be cool, have a section of seats extend into the outfield past the foul line, so if a ball falls in it's a homerun, but if it goes 20 feet further it's fair as there would be no seats there!

Or maybe take a patch out of center field and put bleachers there. Maybe an underground tunnel to get there :cap:

If you mean going over the stands and landing behind them the rulemakers would certainly make a ground rule calling it in the stands.

                Okay, my stadium idea.

Anybody heard of the airport in Kansai Japan or the luxury islands in Dubai? They are man made islands in the middle of the ocean.

SO....my stadium idea would be build a world class stadium out in the pacific. Why not atlantic? Because there are no hurricanes out in the pacific. Parking would be on the mainland, so the stadium stands out as the only structure on the man made island. This stadium would only hold between 40,000 and 46,000 people. Also, this would be an open air facility with the outfield view being the shore line of the main land. It would be asymetrical, 4 tiers with one tier devoted to the press box and luxury boxes. As far as technological advances, well, being the future, I can this stadium having amenities such as well, being out in the ocean, cool nights, seat warmers...and something rather unusual....the field level can expand. The rest of the stadium can roll over the field level seats to increase or decrease capacity. Why do this? That way, an illusion of sell out games can be created to make whoever plays here a hot ticket. Wiorth the hassel? I don't know, but will come in handy during play offs. Also, there will be a permanent left field pavillion and the right field pavillion will sit on hydrolic lifts so during weekend games, hot ticket games or play offs, these seats will be available. Other wise, that section will have no obstructed view of the shoreline.

I know...crazy...but sounds cool for 50 years in the future.

My first point is, I always felt like hok listened to what the teams once, espically after seeing what the rays want. The problem is most teams like that old brick design, because most people who go to the game aren't huge stadium fans like use and think its cool to have one of their own. I would work with hok because they seem to build you a quality stadium in a reasonable amount of time.

Other weird features for a new stadium would be having all field turf. I saw a college with this once, I forget what school but everythink is that new field turf that is made of rubber and looks like real grass, they just painted it the colors you want. The only think not field turf is the pitchers mound. It looks weird and cool all in one.

Also I think it would be cool if stadiums went back to the idea of having the seats right on top of the field so it was loud and intemidating.
The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time.
