  • Any of you guys ever attend a new stadium's first game?

With Nationals Park opening for the Nats this season, that got me wondering:

Have any of you guys ever been to a first game at a brand-new stadium?

I was at the first game ever played at Jacobs Field. It was an exhibition game against the Pirates. Manny Ramirez almost got hit on the head by a fly ball.

I was at the exhibition game at Busch III back on '06 when they had the AA Springfield Cardinals vs the AAA Memphis Redbirds. I don't think i really watched any of the game. I pretty much explored the whole stadium, as did most of the people there, which made the concourses very crowded.

        Baseball:
Last game at Memorial Stadium (though a minor league team played there later) and first at Camden Yards.

        Football:
Last game at Memorial Stadium - Ravens (Didn't see the Colts' last game there though) and first at Ravens' current stadium, M&T.

I was at the first game at new Busch Stadium against Milw. (also an exhibition game between Springfield Redbirds (AA) against Memphis Redbirds (AAA) the week earlier. A funny thing that first reg season game. I went to the bathroom in the top of the 2nd when Milw. was batting and waited in a long line. By the time I got to the urinel the Cards were batting and Pujols hits the first Cardinal homerun at the new stadium, while I'm standing there holding my..., well, you get the picture ! It was cool to be at an opening. I am fortunate enough to have seen the last game at old Busch. I also saw the first games at the new home of the Blues (1994) and the new home of the Rams (1995)

I was also at the last Indians game at Cleveland Stadium. I went to the entire series and got to see the Indians get swept by the White Sox.

Does the game they played last week, George Washington University v. St. Joseph's, count as the very first game ever played even though tickets were not made available to the public, but only to a select class of people? (In this case, students from the respective colleges.)

Speaking on behalf of me, I've never been to the first game of a new stadium, but I was at the very first Colorado Rockies game ever - April 1993 at Shea Stadium. I snapped a picture of the very first pitch from my upper deck third-base-side seat, and what fascinates me the most about that photo was the number of fans who were still coming to the game - still on the subway ramp, still outside the park on their way to the gates, &c.

You would think - okay, I'd think, anyway - that because of the historic nature of that game, and because New York baseball fans are supposed to be so knowledgeable about the sport and its history, that anyone with a ticket to that game would have made it their business to be in their seat in time to witness the historical moment.
Please help. I was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer last summer, and now I'm in a position where I need financial assistance. For the full story, please check out my GoFundMe campaign at https://gofund.me/3874ea2d. Thank you.

Attended last games for Eagles and Phillies at Veterans Stadium.

Attended first event at Lincoln Financial Field (Manchester United v. Barcelona in soccer) as well as Citizens Bank Park (exhibition game between Phillies and Indians). Also attended home openers for Eagles and Phillies that year.

I was also at the last game at Cleveland Municipal Stadium.
I was an usher supervisor in the bleachers.

I also attended the first game at The Jake, the exhibition game against the Pirates.
                  Sat in the bleachers.

I was a ticket taker at the first official game against the Mariners
And then hung out in the bleachers for the rest of the game.
I did get to say hi to President Clinton in the basement concourse though.

First Nationals game at Nationals Park (assuming I live to see tomorrow).

I was at the first game at Minute Maid Park. It was an exhibition game with the Yankees and the Astros won 6-5. The Yankees also opened up the Astrodome, so it was a full circle type of thing. Mickey Mantle hit the first homer in the Dome and Ricky Ledee hit the first homer at Minute Maid Park.

I was also at the last game ever played in the Astrodome.

I attended the last night game at Cleveland Stadium and the first regular season game at Jacob's Field (almost a no-hitter by Randy Johnson).

Why are you going to be around some Yankee fans or is that an Agnostic statement.

I was at the opening day at the renovated Yankee Stadium. In fact I'm flying to N.Y. tomorrow. I will be at the last opening day of Yankee Stadium.

                              I am SO . . .
Mythical SF Chronicle scouting report: "That Jeff runs like a deer. Unfortunately, he also hits AND throws like one." I am Venus DeMilo - NO ARM! I can play like a big leaguer, I can field like Luzinski, run like Lombardi. The secret to managing is keeping the ones who hate you away from the undecided ones. I am a triumph of quantity over quality. I'm almost useful, every village needs an idiot.
