  • Area 51

For those of you who are fortunate to have Google Earth, I found a pretty interesting thing. In the search function, type "Area 51, Nevada" To the left of all the buildings and facilities, there is a baseball field on the property. I wonder how large it is? I wonder how many other military instillation have established baseball fields?

Do you need a top secret clearance to play there? Do the aliens know how to turn a double-play? The rest of the US plays the World Series, while at Area 51, they play the Interglactic Series. "Take me out to the flying saucer...." I'm sure we can think of a million jokes about this topic but I won't go there.

Is there a football field to the right of it?

I've noticed that they do blur certain things out.

              If you build it . . .
. . . they will come. Or would it be more like angels in the outfield?
At least they can turn an authentic phantom double play.
Is there a phone in the bullpen for ET to . . . ?
Personally, many years ago I think they left Casey Stengel behind here
Mythical SF Chronicle scouting report: "That Jeff runs like a deer. Unfortunately, he also hits AND throws like one." I am Venus DeMilo - NO ARM! I can play like a big leaguer, I can field like Luzinski, run like Lombardi. The secret to managing is keeping the ones who hate you away from the undecided ones. I am a triumph of quantity over quality. I'm almost useful, every village needs an idiot.

Actually not. There are large portions of the country that don't show up. One example: my son is about to attend Miami University in Oxford OH. The entire campus is a blurred image. Not exactly top secret. also, if you type in Petco Park, you see a construction site, not the finished building.

Now we know whatever happened to Mark Fidrych. Prolly Sidd Finch as well...

fwiw, some older satellite images are of lower quality and look blurry. Most smaller towns and rural areas are like that (some rural areas don't show up at all), and some neighborhoods in larger cities as well.

For example, the photos of Busch Gardens in Tampa used to be low resolution and I wondered if it was on purpose, but they've since acquired new images and now you can see every ride.

They've been updating a lot lately. I used to be able to see my car parked at the Phillies game (no joke!) but they updated the photo. Tthe old one was from 2004, not sure when the updated one is from but now the stadium is empty. But I was surprised at their lack of quality images in some areas, especially San Diego since Petco is still in the early stages of being built.

I think it's pretty cool though that some of the shots were taken while a sporting event was going on. Yankee Stadium and Qwest Field in Seattle are two I know of for sure, any others?

Two things I have noticed is that with certain things they used to look like everything else, but I remember a few months ago checking out some football stadiums and they had side pictures not just over the top pictures. You just clicked a link or soemthing. Its been a few months so maybe i am confussing things, but that was cool.

I bet some companies found out and demaneded their stuff look top notch on google earth to impress people.
The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time.

                        To OP:

I think that is actually a softball field. Do some quick measurements and you'll see. However, the outfield wall looks interesting...

If you have 3D buildings turned on, some of the models from the Google Sketchup Warehouse will show up. I was very surprised and excited to be zooming around Google Earth one day and come across the models I made for Lincoln Financial Field and the Wachovia Center in Google Earth!!! My Shea Stadium model was in there too until Google replaced it with their much crappier version
