  • Buying old stadium seats--what are they attached to?

Just wondering how exactly they'll work it with the seats at Shea, because some of them, at least the upper deck, are attached to the back of the step behind, rather than being attached to the ground.

What are they mounted onto when they are sold?

    Probably something like this.

I was walking around the loge during BP yesterday, the vast majority of those seats are in awful condition. You'd have to be crazy to buy one of those. Oddly the ones in the Mezz are in much better shape.

Since I've had Saturday seats in the mezz for the last 10 years I'd consider buying a green pair if the price isn't too outrageous.

I don't have a picture, but in ST.L they came with the mounting hardware so you could sit on them while they were in a "standing" position. Then you could mount that flush to the ground.

Hmmm, seeing that picture makes me wonder what sort of condition the Shea seats will be in if you buy them this Fall. Do they clean them up and give the paint a touch-up before selling them?

I bought my seats from Riverfront Stadium "as is" and they didn't have the seat "legs" so that you could sit in them. I had the ones for my seats made by a friend.

After I bought them, I took them to the carwash and hosed them down and they cleaned them up well.

I bought red, green and blue seats. They were $15 apiece. And you could buy parts and assemble the seats yourself if you wanted. I should have gotten a #14 red seat but they were all scooped up.

Most collectors don't want them touched up as they want them just as they were when they came from the park.

Wow, $15!?? I'm thinking the ones from Shea will be in the $150-$250 range

You never know, but I doubt the Mets would take the time to touch up and clean each individual seat before selling them. I would almost guarantee that the seats are going to be sold as is, not too sure about the rusty hardware though.

I agree. Didn't someone write that they will have 15 days to clear out the Stadium. I'm very interested in purchasing a seat for myself, but I have feeling they will be "as is" with no stands.

If they want to clear out the Stadium quickly, they should just leave it ungaurded for a couple of days. Really, it would be cleared clean in about 15 hours !

The seats I bought from Milwaukee County Stadium were similarly mounted at the park, and they came with braces so they can sit on the floor.

I'm shocked that the Reds sold theirs so cheaply. Standard market is at least ten times that amount.

As for the condition, I'd echo that many collectors (myself included) don't want them cleaned up. Some people like them restored, but anyone who wants that can do it themselves.

Some teams just remove the seats and as I said earlier, "as is". Some of the seats that the Reds sold had been removed and you could see where they had been cut away from the step behind them with a torch because the bolts were frozen. They would be difficult to attach to one of those brackets to sit in that way. Some people bought extra parts to replace the parts that were broken, unusuable, etc.

At the sale of the Reds seats after they had been removed from the stadium, they brought the seats in on front-loaders and just dumped them in a pile to be picked through. The seats that were attached of 3 or more, they were laid out in rows.

I think bolts were .25 cents, seat backs and bottoms were $7.50 and arms were......I can't remember.

A lot of teams clean the seats up and mount them on brackets so they can generate more revenue. I got the impression that the Reds were getting rid of their "junk".

Lots of people bought certain numbered seats and seatbacks to get autographed at the December RedsFest. The numbers 14, 5, 8, 10, 13 and 24 were most sought after.

The Reds also sold the seats that were used for the extra seats that were put in place after baseball season was over to make extra seats for the football configuration after the Bengals moved to Paul Brown Stadium. Those seats were higher and I bought a pair of blue seats that were floor mounted in perfect shape for $125.00.

My only regret is that I didn't get a #14 red seat and I didn't get a yellow padded seat or just a plain yellow seat. the yellow seats weren't faded as bad as some of the other colors because they weren't exposed to as much sun.

You will be lucky if you get them for less than $250-$350 for a single at Shea. As far as Yankee Stadium, I'm betting no less than $750-$1,000 a seat.

I might be wrong, but remember it is New York.

Yeah, $1000 won't help you with a seat from the "old Yankee Stadium" - they go for about $1800 these days.

I think you'll be able to get a 1976-2008 seat for your grand, once they figure out how they're going to handle the sale.
