        • It was a beautiful day in San Diego today so I decided to cut out of work a little early and take a stroll down to Petco Park to check out progress on the new fences. Really, there's not much to see anymore because construction is effectively finished with workers now seemingly placing finishing touches on their work. Not bad, considering the Padres home opener is, give or take, 5 weeks away. Because of that, I only snapped two pictures of the work that is going on.

First picture shows the right field fence. Looks like the new out-of-town scoreboard ended up being placed next to the warning track afterall. Previous artists renderings showed that it would be going on the facade on between the upper and lower deck in right field:

Just a general picture taken from the bleachers of the new fence in right-center field. The field is being re-sodded:

          • A series of much better pictures taken from Keith Barnes and placed on his Smugmug page. You can see how the whole field has been torn up and also get a much better view of the overall fences project which is all but completed:

            • A very brief news story from yesterday showing pretty good aerial photos of the changes made to the park. Notice the large difference in right field where the new party seats (a la Citi Field) are being installed:

              • Padres CEO Tom Garfinkel posted a Twitter update yesterday showing the new grass being rolled in. Opening Day is just a few short weeks away!

                • Been a while since we've had an update. This one is a Twitter picture from head groundskeeper, Luke Yoder, showing the completed right field renovations. A new HD scoreboard was indeed installed next to the warning track. But, as earlier renderings showed, a ribbon board was also installed on the facade between the upper and lower right field seating areas. Unfortunately, it looks like the ugly stark-gray concrete wall in right field could be left unpainted.

                        • I wonder if the capacity would still be above 40k if the 2nd deck in the RF seating were removed entirely and seating sections replaced the gaps in the upper deck where those towers are. Too bad it wasn't built that way originally.

That wall is prime real estate for ad revenue. Expect it to be covered in a few billboards before opening day.

                            • I'm just glad that there have been three 2000s ballparks now that have shrunk their dimensions in the last two years to get more offense. You think some other ones will follow suit? Ahe...ATT, Target.
Using a stolen chant from Boston Celtics fans whenever an L.A. team is playing up there just reeks of inferiority complex.

If hitting a baseball is the toughest thing to do in sports, then pitching must be the easiest thing to do in sports.
