  • Largest crowd ever for a U.S. stadium sports event?

What's the largest crowd ever for a regular stadium sporting event in the U.S.? Not counting motorsports or horse racing-type events. Just a regular stadium.

    ???

Soldiers Field in Chicago and all time college football attendance record was set on November 16, 1929 when the Notre Dame Fighting Irish beat the USC Trojans 13-12 in front of 112,912 fans.

Unofficially, the NCAA estimates that crowds of 120,000 people watched games involving Notre Dame and USC in 1927 and Notre Dame and Navy in 1928 at Soldier Field in Chicago.
A confirmed 112,912 fans watched Notre Dame defeat USC at Soldier Field in 1929, which beats Michigan's record of the current era.
They once packed 260,000 people in there for something called the Catholic Church's Marian Year Tribute in 1954.

If you count boxing, I think crowds of 140,000 saw Dempsey fight in Philadelpia's Muncipal (JFK) Stadium and maybe even Soldiers Field in Chicago.

Does the silverdome still hold the record for the largest indoor spors event with wwf's wrestlemania 3? I think it was around 90,000. I think Ford field may have beaten that record though.
The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time.

                      Wrestlemania is not a sport.

Don't forget that for tax purposes it stopped classifying itself as a sport. But they are athletes, and the entertainment is based upon sport.

Couldn't they pay Alexander Karelin $1,000,000 or so to come over from Russia and throw some of those guys around?
I'd pay good money to see that.
Heck, give him a rematch with Rulon Gardner while he's in town.

I'm sure they would if they could. Gardner was approached, he wasn't interested. But wrestling ability only goes so far when you have the personality of a tree stump and move like a turtle. I've only seen Karelin in the Olympics, so I have honestly have no idea how he would do in other important areas of rasslin'.

I do believe a Dempsey fight hold the U.S. record. An Oscar De La Hoya fight in Mexico drew about 150,000, I believe.
