The new Stadium will be turned over to the Yanks in Feb 2009, at which time the offices, etc will move from Old to New. Asbestos removal is scheduled for March-April of '09. Then the real demolition begins, but not like Tiger Stadiums. Yankee Stadium will be carefully taken apart piece by piece, so u$ fan$ can buy them up.Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to Yankee Stadium. Here are the lineups for todays game...

When does it start??
When does the inevitable begin? I was looking at the Shea demo thread and got a pit in my stomach watching them start to remove seats and such.. (and I grew up at OYS!!) I wonder how people will feel when our place gets demo'ed.. It' going to feel kind of weird not having it around when it's been a constant thread in our forty something Yankee fan lives..

well the official last event in the stadium is sometime in November, and i dont think they starting deconstruction until like, April or so. but total demolition wont happen for over a year, I think. im just going by memory from whats been posted on here.
but yeah, you are right. it is kinda sad seeing Shea being deconstructed so quickly. even though I am not a Mets fan, its where I saw my first baseball game, so that holds a special place in my memory.

why do you all call Yankee Stadium a girl? Can a building have a sex? I never knew that. Does that make the new Yankee Stadium the original Stadium's son?
I seriously really dont get why people call things that aren't people "she".
Anyway, yeah, I think after that final concert/whatever it's supposed to be, theyre gonna start taking things out, but theyre gonna do it really slowly, and piece by piece.

The only reason there isn't significantly larger outcry about the YS demolition is becuase it's not the same stadium. Sure, same "lot", some leftover steel, much of the outer wall/facade, etc, but it just really doesn't look like the original. It's an early 70s stadium (newer than Shea) in many regards. And much of the part of it that's from the 70s isn't the prettiest thing in the world.
If Yankee Stadium was a much more conservative remodel (if they had found a way to keep the stadium identical to the old YS and just remove the columns, for example) then there'd probably be significantly more outcry.
As much as some Yankee fans want to think it's the same thing as Wrigley or Fenway, it's not. It was a significant chop job when the remodeled the Stadium, and aside from a bit of structure that remained similar and some of the outer wall that surrounds the stadium, very little is recognizable from before the plastic surgery.
Not that the current stadium doesn't hold significant emotional attchment, but it's just not the same stadium that millions visited and so many players made history in pre-1973.New York Yankees

NYS: "He told me enough. He told me you killed him - in the 1970s!!"
RYS: "No, I am your father..."
NYS: "No, it's not true, that's impossible!!!!"
