  • Honolulu Stadium

Does anyone have any information concerning the field dimensions for baseball for the old Honolulu Stadium, AKA the Termite Palace? I was wondering about this because I had seen pics of the old stadium on an old "This Week in Baseball" episode with Mel Allen and also on Hawaii Five-O were Pernell Roberts ("Bonanza", "Trapper John MD") played a catcher for the Hawaii Islanders baseball team whose mentally disabled son is witness to a crime and enlists the help of Steve McGarrett (Jack Lord) and Danny "Book 'em, Danno" Williams (James MacArthur).

I also read something on the internet that two men that would be cast members of Hawaii Five-O played high school football games at the Termite Palace: Herman Wedemeyer, who played Duke Lukela, and Al Harrington, who played Ben Kokua.

If anyone has anything on Honolulu Stadium, such as stadium maps, field dimensions, and stories, let me know.

Some sites with info about the stadium: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honolulu_Stadium
      http://starbulletin.com/96/11/25/features/story2.html

Included a couple of shots of the stadium, two overheads showing the entire field and another showing the home plate area...

By the way the episode was a two part episode that aired in the third season, titled "The Grand Stand Play Part 1" and "The Grand Stand Play Part 2"

You're welcome on the tribute. My Father is from your home state, or should I say, Commonwealth.

I've spent about an hour looking up the dimensions and have given up. None of my sources have it. There is, however, a book entitled "Honolulu Stadium: Where Hawaii Played" by Arthur Suehiro written in 1995. If you can get your hands on that I'd bet the dimensions would be there. It's an uncommon book and expensive to own ($69.95 for the cheapest used copy on Amazon). Apparently there is also a DVD produced by PBS in Hawaii about the ballpark, but I don't know about it's content.

            It's funny

I've been looking for that same episode of Hawaii Five 0 too! I was never a big five O fan but I rememember that episode. Now I try to collect rare minor league stadium photos and Honolulu stadium pica are rare.

There has been some recently posted picture on this web site of some past pictures and the current stadium.

Sporting News articles from the PCL's Hawaii Islanders' opening series at Honolulu Stadium, May 1961. Dimensions were 322 to left, 432 to center and 302 to right (text lower right), which apparently made it quite a bandbox with plans to erect screens for future series.

4/69 - The Termite Palace (although it wasn't razed until 1976):

With Aloha Stadium football only, is Les Murakami Stadium/Rainbow Stadium the only baseball facility in Honolulu?

It reminds me a lot of The Diamond at Richmond (double decked grandstand around the diamond, small lower deck, large upper deck. )Except I will say the setting is a lot nicer, it being Hawaii and all.

Aloha Stadium hosted a 3 game series in '97 between the Cardinals and Padres.
