Bert Kaufman Field

Indiana University's Bert Kaufman Field. Amazing, this probably isn't the only one, but I've never seen a ballpark with a FieldTurf mound. Even ballparks whose fields are entirely synthetic, usually the mound is dirt, not here.

I hate how these southwestern schools have all field turf, they can easily grow good grass!

Talking to people who have played on fields with fieldturf mounds, it sounds like they have to replace the "landing" area for pitchers once a year because of wear and tear. The problem with the dirt mound is trying to keep the dirt and fieldturf seperate. We have a fieldturf diamond where I live and people don't really care for it. One gripe, although minor, is you can't have seeds, gum, or gatorade/pop on the field. The seeds cut the turf and the sugar in gatorade/pop break down the turf. Most people don't realize how delicate these fields actually can be. They need to be groomed and cleaned more than grass fields, if you want them to last.

We are planning on adding a fieldturf baseball and softball field. I am interested to see how they work the pitching area in a fieldturf softball field.

Stengel Field (built in 1949) in Glendale, California, home to Glendale Community College and the Summer Collegiate Glendale Angelenos (pics courtesy of the City of Glendale, CA). This park was also the Spring Training home of the Pacific Coast League Portland Beavers from 1953-57:...

Capaha Field in Cape Girardeau, MO. Plays home to the Southeast Missouri State Redhawks, the Plaza Tire Capahas (one of the oldest amateur teams in the country), and some American Legion teams. Capaha also was the spring home of the St. Louis Browns during WWII.

The U of Michigan's Board of Regents has approved a plan to install a synthetic playing surface at Ray Fisher Stadium! This is good news, as it will allow the Wolverines to begin their season earlier and improve the playing conditions.

Possibly, the field will be drier, that's for sure. Being able-bodied and blessed with the ability to see your own toes is great!
