What's the point of a warning track that is just a different color carpet?

Is there dirt at the bases? I see the circular shape around each base.

Although it still looks synthetic. Even the plate looks different than the basepaths. Possible that when the field was built that the bases were dirt. Then, after so many other places went full synthetic, they retrofitted this to an all synthetic surface? Interesting.

EDIT - Looks like the plate was real dirt at one time:
