Complete list of USAbat bats, including MSRP

I spent a couple days compiling specs on all the bats currently available with the USAbat logo, as well as bats soon coming out for which I had some information. I posted the spreadsheet on my blog. The list can be viewed on the web using a desktop browser (but not a phone) or downloaded:

Note that there is a list on the official USAbat site as well but it doesn't have as many columns of information, and after spending a number of painstaking hours checking everything, I believe the usabat's list is less accurate (i.e. Axe Bat T-ball bat information on usabat site is not accurate):

Feedback on anything inaccurate is welcome (please include link to your information source).

I plan to maintain this list for at least a few months, perhaps longer. The more help I get, the longer I'll maintain the list.

Should be pretty easy to maintain short term as there aren't yet a large number of bats. There are literally only 5 manufacturers with bats currently available (Axe, Easton, Louisville Slugger, Mizuno, Rawlings), and two more to be available soon (DeMarini, Franklin Sports).

Many of these models are not yet available, especially T-ball.

I know for sure that there are some Axe bat models coming out in time for Christmas aimed at 7-10 year-olds but I have zero information beyond that so they're not on the list. As soon as I get a new model number, it goes on the list.

Dirty South Bats are made in Atlanta and make a pretty good bat. They are going to have a USABat model:

"Effective January 1, 2018 all recreation baseball organizations will be moving to a new USA certified bat. Travel ball and USSSA will stay the same with no changes. This USA bat will perform considerably different than the 1.15BPF bats. The intent of the USA bat is to perform just like a wood bat; therefore, the pop or trampoline of the bat will be greatly reduced. As an example, a normal 10 yr old kid will lose about 50’ in distance when compared to existing bats. "

Thanks for the heads up on Dirty South Bats. As soon as they come out with model numbers, I'll add them to the list.

The 50' claim is not true. I did a lot of research on this a couple years ago and found (with the help of Alan Nathan's baseball trajectory spreadsheet and various measurements and experiments I did) that a typical 10 year old could hit the ball about 9 feet further with a high end bat as compared with a low end 1.15 BPF bat, assuming both balls hit the sweet spot. The very best 10 year old would be able to do about 15 feet further. It could be that the new USAbat standard will lead to even less distance by 5' or 10' compared to the worst BPF 1.15 bat - I won't really know until I get hold of such a bat and do experiments. But a number any higher than 20' is implausible, in the hands of a 10 year old.

These numbers go up as kids get older though, as their swing speeds go up and the overall size/weight of the bat goes up. By the age of 12 it could be as much as 50' difference among the better hitters.

I think the bigger value of the high end bat like a Mako for a 10 year old is not the extra distance, but the larger size of the sweet spot. Many hits that would be a mishit on a low end bat are good hits off a Mako. I could imagine a 50' difference when comparing a Mako sweet spot hit with a bottom of the line bat hitting on the non-sweet spot part of the barrel.

Thanks. That one is interesting as Anderson does not have it listed on their site . . . but the old Techzilla 2.0 is on clearance, with different item number. So likely cheapbats.com is correct that Techzilla will soon come out with a replacement. I guess I'll put ??? for availability date.

I am admittedly not familiar with the technical details on how this is supposed to work, but my gut tells me that a lot of the lower end aluminum bats - the 2 1/4 little league discount store models - will be exactly the same bat as in prior years, except with the proper marking on it, which makes me think the "money grab" aspect of this is for real.

The idealistic LL board member in me gets mad when I think that a lot of our less affluent families will be forced to buy a brand new bat solely for the sake of needing a brand new bat. I know it's slightly more complicated than that and would be hard to put in a "new standard" without starting fresh, but it still pisses me off.

I'm also wondering if it might make sense for leagues (or coaches individually) to provide compliant bats for entire teams for a couple of years until the resell market reaches critical mass.

Interesting. Of course, the draw of the Techzilla was it was the biggest, baddest bat you could buy for youth leagues. Heaviest and also endloaded. I dunno that there's going to be anything special about it anymore.

The official approved bat list on usabat.com list is no longer showing. Probably just a temporary thing . . . but so long as that list is down, the list I put up is the only USAbat list.

I updated my list yesterday with Anderson and the Easton S750C.

I also made each 3rd row a light gray color in order to make it easier on the eyes to track one line across the long row.

I expect this will get updated several times/week over the next couple months as many new bats come onto the market.
