  • The annual "How Many Games" thread....

Spring Rec Ball is ending this week (League Tourney is on going ...we could be eliminated today but we did pull the upset of the tourney so far; 7seed beat the 2seed)

Anywyay.....I was looking over stats and calculated games and practices....

    8u Rookie Machine Pitch
    1st practice in mid Feb
    1st game early March
    21 practices
    22 games (includong 3 tourneys)
    8-13-1 record

    About average?
    Too much?
    Too little practices?

AS practice starts next week and a tourney 5/18-5/20 so no real break at this time
AS should go thru early June (hopefully early July)

And then 1 week baseball camp at UF

41 days over 2.5 months doesn't seem too bad, maybe slightly much for 8u but who cares as long as the kids are having fun.

When my son was eight he played rec 7/8’s. It was 16 games and 16 practices. After the season we had an informal, twice a week for six weeks, dad pitch, pickup game for anyone who showed. Typically the same best 16-20 kids showed.

My younger son's 8/7u Coach Pitch Team (PONY/LL):
        Sept '17 - June '18
36 league games (12 PONY "Instructional", 12 LL, 12 PONY Competitive)
5 tournament games (Memorial Day Weekend)
Approx 130 league practices (3-4x week depending on weekday game, about 90+% attendance), 7 tournament team practices (Sundays)
They're probably the #5 team on island. The teams ahead of them practice as much or more and have some roster advantages.

We have some roster restrictions; can only have 8 "older" players (8 year olds), the rest of the roster must be 7s or 6s. Bat the lineup, can't play same defensive position for more than 3 innings, no player sits for consecutive innings. We have a roster of 15 players.

Normal as long as they are enjoying it.

3 games/week is high - I think most leagues do at most 2 games/week. Our league has over twice as many pratices as games each season. Practices start in early Feb and typically 4x/week are scheduled but many get rained out for net of 2-3 practices/week before first game in March.

I'm division president for 9-10 year old division this year. I thought it was a particularly weak group of players when I ran evaluations in January but then February had fewer rained out practices than usual, so most players ended up getting 10-12 practices in before first game in March (higher than the usual 6-9 practices in a typically rainy February). The improvement was stunning. 12 practices with good coaching staffs can work wonders.

HS JV team only played 14 games due to all the rainouts, which are not made up around here. Summer team should play about twice that many.
