  • Son meets Baseball Star!!!

Well my son is star struck! We live in a little town outside of where the Red Sox Training camp is. My son, daughter and i were coming out of a pizza and wing restaraunt when we saw a small group of people get out of a nice suv and one of them caught my eye. My daughter got into our car with the food we picked up and this guy i spotted looked like Jason Varitek. The more i looked the more i was sure. So with my son heading to his side of the car the guy walked towards me and i asked him what his name was ,he said Jason,I said Varitek, he said yep. I turned to my son and asked him ,do you know who this is,my son said no. I said Matthew this is the catcher of your baseball team that you love, this is Jason Varitek. My son said no way, with his jaw on the ground. (My son is 12, He has played catcher since he was 7 and has been on allstars every year.) My son loves Jason Varitek! Should have known before me but it caught him of gaurd! Jason was in the process of putting his daughter on his back. He leaned over and stuck his hand out ,to shake my sons hand. My son was in shock. Jason said how you doing buddy. He then stood up and i told him have a good night. My son could not say a word , all the way home he was in shock. I know we can go and see him at spring training camp but it was really cool to be caught of guard in our small town. We did not ask for a picture or a signature. I feel like when he is out with family thats his time not mine. My son and daughter feel the same way. My son has no regrets but has no words on how cool that was seeing Jason Varitek at a small place we eat at.

Good story. It'll be something he'll remember forever.

Good thing he didn't talk to Mitch Williams because he isn't smarter than a fifth grader. What a maroon that guy is.........LMAO.

It is special at that age to meet some one that you pattern your play after or wear their number. You will find that players that have kids are generally more receptive to kids at the park because they don't get a chance to see their kids on a regular basis.

Has your son said anything YET? Great story. Varitek is my wife's favorite too. Shows respect not asking for an autograph too.

HE HAS TOLD FRIENDS, FAMILY AND EVERYTIME HE TELLS IT HE STARTS TO STARE INTO SPACE AT THE END. He seems to play it over in his head as it happened. Also he had a practice game the very next day against another team ,since season has not started yet, and he was on fire. I went over to the dugout after one inner and said boy you are a machine out there. He said when Jason shook my hand some of it transfered to me. I LOL and said you never know. I hope the spark stays in him all year. I ordered a Jason Varitek Nike jersey off Ebay last night ,that he does not know about. I hope this does not seem overboard ,but i still remember being a kid and i think he will love it.

It's not overboard. It's making me jealous.

MD, sounds like you've played it just right from top to bottom, including letting the guy go without the autograph. And, as GoCards says, that's not overboard.

Kids need heroes, even one who just comes down from Olympus to say, "How ya doin'" to a 12 year old catcher. Not only will the encounter propel your son toward a new zeal toward the Best Game Ever Invented, it will hopefully infect the attitude he takes toward younger kids, and younger ballplayers. For example, my son -- now 13 -- is and always has been of course an outstanding citizen. But, after the kindness that he's received the few times that he's met HiddenGem, my son makes sure to work out with younger kids and give them encouragement. And it's a part of his larger personal philosophy to be kind to those without the advantages that he's had. As with all things about baseball, the life lessons are huge.

Congrats to you both. Great story.
sigpicIt's not whether you fall -- everyone does -- but how you come out of the fall that counts.

You are 100% correct in that entire paragraph.

I am 15. I am a freshman in HS. If my hero/ idol/ god Albert Pujols said hi to me, I would be in a similar state as MD's son.

I would have done it differently though. If I met Albert Pujols, I wouldn't care about bats, balls, hats, autographs, etc. You know what I would want to do? I want to ask him about hitting. I want to ask him about his swing. What his hitting philosophies are. That, and meeting the guy, would mean more to me than any item or any material gift.

As I said before... MD, you are doing everything great. I am truly jealous.
