  • Criteria for making high school team

In the past we've discussed how coaches decide who makes the high school team. I found my son's letter today.

"First, skills that are difficult to teach in a short period of time like running speed, throwing strength, athleticism, quick aggressive swing, hand-eye coordination and what baseball people call "baseball instincts."

Next we look at skills that can be improved. Those include pitching mechanics, swing mechanics, offensive and defensive footwork, base running, fielding and bunting.

Important intangibles are hustle and attitude on the field and academic performance and citizenship off the field."

TG, I think those are OK. My hat's off to HS coaches...tough job; little pay; a lot of grief from AD's and parents and outside influences with and axe to grind....I support them, of course, until he doesn't pick my kid.

I like the team rules. One of them about respecting the game states any player leaving the locker room with their game or practice jersey unbuttoned and/or untucked or wearing their hat in any direction but straight ahead will be removed from participation in that day's event (practice/game).
