  • Hitting Problems

Lately i've had a hitting problem. My coach says my timing is fine and my mechanics are good he says its like I almost can't see it. He says I am just missing it with my bat. Does anyone know how to fix this problem?? He said it might be that I might not be keeping my head down long enough?

Just try to watch it hit the bat. Although impossible, it will insure that you do not pull up to early.

That could be. Without seeing your swing, I can't really say, but if you move your head up, down, or forward more than two inches, after your front foot gets weighted your chances of hitting the ball are reduced greatly. You MUST keep your head still unless you have to move it toward the plate to get a low outside pitch. Pros rarely move their head forward or up, or away from the plate. It's not a matter of keeping your head "down", it's a matter of keeping it pretty much in one place from launch of the bat, to contact.

Watching batting practice at my son's LL, I notice the kids that hit the ball well versus those that did had one main thing different. There grip. Its very easy to forget. We'd go over with the kids before practice, but when they get up, they all forget.

            What grip do you teach?

if you think its really just your hitting eye you could try hitting the little golf wiffle balls for a couple days. Once you start hitting them you can go back to a baseball. just an idea.

Do you see the ball at release? Track the first dab of white?
If so, do you lose it with the stride?
Cock & stride with every pitch? Early, easy, smooth?
There might be bugs in there that overwork you later, tighten up the swing, and move your head etc.
A suggestion was made about your grip; that's a Maybe worth testing.

I like the Lining up Knocker knuckle grip. I notice it feels uncomfortable when the bat is at the rear shoulder, which is probably why most kids dont grip correctly. But once the bat is horizontal this grips feels very good.

Few hitters use the knocking knuckles lined up.
                        Here's Ortiz:

Take the bat with the front hand and place it on the other side of the plate. Bring the other hand to the bat and bring the bat over your head like you were chopping wood. That would be a good place to start.

This picture has his knocker knuckles sorta lined up, but notice how the top hand is open and barely gripping the bat because in this position it feels awkward to hold the bat up with the knuckles lined up. IMO when he grips and rips his knuckles will line up. Aint it great that they make the batting gloves visually easy to see where the knuckls are!

That grip is rarely used by MLB hitters. Maybe 5 or 10 out of a hundred. Most line the top knocking knuckles up with where a ring would be on the bottom hand, or they use the box grip.

                            Most hold the bat like the photo below, or they move the top knuckles over to where the black line is;

Barry Bonds uses the "box" as did Willie Mays. Ted Williams also used it.

Hank Aaron actually had the top knuckles on the side closest to his body.
