  • regaining running speed

Around this time last year, I was the fastest player in my division in NE AAU. This year, I decided to bulk up. I added 10 lb., but I also lost about .5 seconds off my 60 time.. I am about average now, and am wondering how I can regain that speed back. I have been running on the treadmill to try and burn some fat, but what are some things I can do other than cutting fat?

    I have been recommended to:

    do extra dynamic warm ups
    sprint more
do the old jumping over a line drill

    Anything else?

Not really interested in any products. I am already seeing a trainer for it but I am in a bit of a hurry. Only a month until the season will start. Only a week till tryouts (not planning to regain speed by then.)

My speed is there. I just need to know how to harness it. Cut 5 lb? I can do it in a week. Dynamic warm ups? Sprints? I can do as many sprints in a week as people do in a month and hope it has the same results. I just need to know what to do. I don't want to lose 5 lb. for nothing, or waste my time sprinting if it won't help me.

real results take time... not just one month... the best thing to do, I guess is sprint. You want to get faster at sprint, so go out and sprint!

            Good luck!

Yes, but I have been steps ahead of my peers for my entire life. It doesn't all fade away in 2 months of off season. What went away in two months should come back in two months. It's not even that people are getting faster, I am just getting slower. I have been sprinting, but my schedule is a bit full. I do maybe 10-15 sprints a week right now, all at around 100 feet. I know it's not enough, but I can't find time for any more.

Don't worry... I'm in the top 5 fastest in the school (I'm a 15 year old freshman). I did 5 sprints in the off season. I did play basketball though.

Good luck, you'll be fine, don't worry.

I dont think you need to work on top speed for baseball, unless thats what u want. Baseball distance is short so there is only time for acceleration. Work on 50s, 30s, and even 10s. Pumping the arms is sometimes used for acceleration.

Work on your explosiveness off the line. That separates the fast from the slow. If you can get up to full speed before everyone else then you will once again be the fastest guy on the field and cut time off your 60. Short circuits with hammer hops, high knees, fast feet, etc followed with a short burst run after is a good way to do that. Set up small hurdles that start out close together and then get further apart when doing sprints or steal starts. Lastly, get on the bungee system connected the wall. Those are a few ways on working on explosiveness.

Dynamic exercises are good. Sprints are better. But sprints are effective for improving speed ONLY if you are taking appropriate rest periods--most speed coaches recommend 1 minute for every 10 yards sprinted. That means if you sprinted 60 yards, you need approximately 6 minutes of rest before you sprint again. Otherwise, you are training stamina, not speed.

Other methods would include plyos, explosive lower body weight training, and things like sled pulling/pushing. But all of these things need proper techinque and supervision to be beneficial. There is no quick and easy way to improve speed. Cutting weight may help, but realistically, you can't lose more than a couple of pounds of FAT in a week. And if you are doing cardio to cut weight, that means you are running SLOW, which is detrimental to imroving speed.

You're at an age where you're going to see a lot of change in who's the best. The physical playing field is going to start balancing.

This generally isn't how it goes down. People get faster, not slower.

Everyone gets faster. Some get faster than people who used to be faster. If you accept your ability at fourteen will keep you in the front of the pack through high school, you're in for a big shock.

There's some merit to that. I could hit the ball hundreds of feet farther than everyone... now people are are hitting homers too... I'm still ahead, but it reminds me that I still need to keep working!

TG... your posts make a lot of sense now as I move up in the baseball totem pole. Glad to hear from you!
