I have alway's posted here to be "set straight" and gain the correct way my son should be palying etc. My new question is a box grip!? One coach say's he uses it, and the other say's no. (Of course they argued about it) My question is what is it exactly, and is it bad? As always thank you in advance for your help!

For some reason that does not surprise me. This new coach thinks he is superman, and just picks at the kid's. We had a great team and lotsa fun last year, but some of the kids are getting frustrated beacuse of the new addition.(You know the type....if my kid play's on your team I get to help coach!)

The most important factor, is that you have the top hand palm facing the pitcher, or bent back. Where you then place your bottom hand, is a matter of your own personal comfort.
Most MLB players these days, want the top hand wrist to be flat, or bent slightly with the palm facing the pitcher at contact.
Not many use the line up of the knocking knuckles. They use the grip shown below, or they line up the top knocking knuckles with where a ring would be on the fingers of the bottom hand.

I do neither of what you state above we have our players do this (Line up the white lines) In between the two stated above - Ted Williams' old axe example.

Nice picture Jim.
Sorta like Hank Aaron.
Great grip for applying early push/pull torque with a wide angle between forearms.
Makes it tough, but not impossible to get the forearm angle narrower at contact without some "wrist bind" wobbling the swing plane in between.
You could let the top hand grip slip, or youcould rock the shoulders like Aaron did.

Barry Bonds uses the "box" as did Willie Mays. Ted Williams lined up with the ring.
Hank Aaron actually had the top knuckles on the side closest to his body.

I'd have to disagree with the box grip. I think we had a prior discussion about this before. But I disagree. I like the line up the knocker knuckles grip. Despite the pictures here, I noticed line up the those knuckles feels like I have better control of the bat, not in the verticle position, but in when the bat is horizontal. While holding the bat, I like the top hand to hold it with mainly the phalanges and the bottom hand to have it in the palm with more of the thumb on it. I'm sure there are plenty of pics out there with PROs lining up there knocker knuckles, but I duno now to paste it.Last edited by LAball; 03-27-2008, 10:06 PM.
