  • John Smoltz using Marshall Mechanics?

I know I had said I was done with Marshall talk on here, but I am injured and bored down here in Florida so I thought I'd open this up.

I sent an email to Doc yesterday that hopefully he will answer on Sunday about John Smoltz. I asked him if he had the chance to turn back time and teach Smoltz his mechanics before he got into pro ball, would he be even more successful than he has been?

This would be assuming that Smoltz followed Doc's program to a T while getting the opportunity to pitch in pro ball.

I ask this because Smoltz had TJ and has gone on to pitch well after it, pretty much securing a spot in Cooperstown.

Personally, I think he has a great delivery, and it can be looked to as a large part of the reason why he has been so successful in the big leagues.

My thoughts are---I agree---you are very bored.

Seriously though, it could be interesting to see his response.

You're injured? What kind of injury? Out for long?

If Smoltz has a great delivery, Id hate to see what a bad one looks like. I agree that he hasnt had as many problems as a lot of pitchers, and he certainly has been a great pitcher during his days, I dont know about the hall of fame, but he certainly has been very very good.

        This is from wikipedia:

"Smoltz had a 6-10 record in the strike-shortened 1994 season, and during the break, had bone chips removed from his elbow.

Smoltz continued to post excellent statistics in 1998 and 1999, but he was spending significant time on the disabled list and missed about a fourth of his starts.

He underwent Tommy John surgery prior to the 2000 season, missing the entire year. When he was unable to perform effectively as a starter in 2001, Smoltz made a transition to the bullpen, filling a void as Atlanta's closer down the stretch.

Despite a sore shoulder, Smoltz pitched seven innings in the Braves' 7-1 win over the Houston Astros in Game Two of the 2005 NLDS."

And now again he is having shoulder problems. I hope he is able to come back and pitch, from what it sounds like he will be. We will see.

            Joe,

John Smotlz Career stats up to this point:
            207W 145L 3.26ERA 53CG 16SHO 154SV 3,367.0IP 2975K's

Do you think that these stats have anything to do with his delivery?

I'm not saying it is an injury-free delivery, but it has been a darn successful one.

I can help yo out with this.

Its vince young throwing uncle rico style. IMO smoltz throws just a lil' better then this.

Notice how vince doesnt scap load, and stays in the drive line.

smoltz is a sure fire hall of famer. No doubt about it. 100% guarantee unless he pops up on one of the bad lists which i doubt.

He stayed as a closer for the braves b/c they needed him to an extra season. Maybe 2 seasons. He was one of the best closers in baseball and once again is one of the best starters

He had a sharp and pain free outing last week. It is just a muscle problem that he has dealt with b4. I think/hope he will just fine. His arm/shoulder always hurts the last couple of months

mainly he got screwed last year b/c the braves needed him to win and pitch a lot of innings every game b/c their other starters besides huddy were horrible

The bullpen was poor and got over worked so Smoltz put even more strain on himself. That guy is an amazing competitor and has definitely taken one for the team on many occasions[QUOTE=fastbal95;1151520]If Smoltz has a great delivery, Id hate to see what a bad one looks like. How did it happen?

I was pitching against Sac.state and prained my ancle on their unmanicured
mound lip and had to tape up and finish the game then keep playing thru
the next games, back then the trainers made us keep playing.

Stepped on a baseball and rolled it during bp.

I would of played on it if I could walk on it at the time.

What great timing... I just went through this with my team this afternoon. One of my rules is all balls during BP go to the buckets and NOTHING gets rolled to coach. Players are to run all balls in and dump them in the coaches BP bucket. The reason - coaches rolling their ankles... We'll be doing a show and tell tomorrow.

When my son made the high school team the coach told him his travel basketball season was over. He had two games left, the championship and the if necessary (lost them both after going 12-1 to that point). The coach didn't want him risking a sprained ankle. In pregame of the third baseball game he stepped back on to a bat during BP and rolled his ankle. He's been out two games.
