Roy Hobbs or Shoeless Joe gloves

Anyone have any experience with either of these? I tend to have "old school" glove tastes, and may be in the market for a new glove. The most modern glove I have I bought about 17 years ago, and it has "Jose Canseco's" name on it. When Canseco was considered a great baseball player, before he became a joke, and before he became the whistle blower. It is the only adult sized glove I have, and it is now missing.

Anyway, hard to find a modern glove whose feel I like. Basically have come to the conclusion that I will have to spend more than I want. Anyway, have found one of each of these that I liked. Since it will be more for playing catch with my son (9) and for nostalgic purposes, I like the names on them. But, know NOTHING about the gloves themselves, as I can't find anything on anyone actually owning or using either.

Anyone have or know of anyone with experience with either of these? If so, please let me know.

I have seen them in stores and did not like them. I am partial to Rawlings HOH so it is hard to appreciate a lightly made glove for rec purposes. The patterns are cool, but that is all. They seem comparable to the Rawlings Sandlot gloves in leather quality and texture. I think they retail for ~ $90 and you can get a nice Rawlings GG with better leather padding for that price. How old is your son? Mine is 11, and the ball stings when you catch it in the pocket (palm). He is just now discovering his arm and likes to let it go when playing catch with his old man.

Just 9.... still got a ways until he can "let it go". And he is actually 8.... doesn't turn 9 till end of the summer.

Yes, the sting in the palm. My "modern" glove was made in the early 90's (very early). Prior to that, most of the gloves I played with were mid 70's or even older. I had (still have) a Pete Rose "softball glove" I used in my pre teen years, made around 1972. It's in BAAAAAD shape now. And how it was once considered a "softball glove", I have no clue. Played in a "beer league" for one season around the time my son was born. I got mocked enough for my smallish glove I used then. Which was bigger than the "softball glove" I owned.

Anyway, back on point. I don't think I've played with a glove that didn't sting in the pocket. I played under the premise that you only used the "pocket" for grounders. You use the webbing for all liners, flies, etc.

Not much. It only happens when I catch the ball wrong. He hides the ball well behind his head and it sometimes has late movement so I do well to catch it rather than get hit with it. It is starting to get fun now! Good luck and have fun!

Just had to use the old Pete Rose MacGregor last night. Looking at your website, though..... I am tempted to get it or a few other old gloves I have relaced. Though, for now, am saving up to replace my MIA Rawlings in case I am forced to do so.

Once in awhile you can find a nice glove on ebay. My youngest got a really good Nokona for $90 last fall, but he may have just gotten lucky.

I just prefer to break them in myself. Really, if my Pete Rose softball glove had been broken in by me, I'd just use that one. Maybe get it reconditioned and relaced. Everybody tends to close their glove a bit differently, and wants them broken in just a little differently. The Pete Rose was broken in before I was even born.
