There is not surprisingly a lot of controversy about this, not just how to tech timing, but whether it can be taught. One of the most respected posters here and elsewhere, DMAC (lifelong baseball guy and scout, now deceased), said it could not be taught.

I do think it can be taught via the Epstein system. He has drills that teach the mlb swing pattern with emphasis on how to adjust up/down and fast slow while teaching how to adjust the plane of the swing to the pitch.

This goes a long way toward learning how to adjust for both location and timing.

see mikeepsteinhitting.com or look at posts here by Callyjr.

Mankin (batspeed.com) and Lau/Lau jr/Peavy (peavynet.com) all describe the same basic MLB swing pattern with emphasis on how to adjust in vs out.

Mankin describes the physics/mechanics of the swing and how the upper body dominates in the in vs out adjustment (direction/timing of early handle torque).

Peavy/Lau emphasize the lower body/frontside/front leg firmup.

Do the soft toss drill, but toss the ball high and low to throw off timeing. But of course, you will have to lob it in the same place, just different heights.

    Jeeptj12,

I don’t know if this is clipually correct, but I have always taught a move back (show the pitcher your hip pocket when he shows you his) when the pitcher separates his hands AND an two way stride (hands back/foot forward) when the pitcher releases the ball.

As long as the move back and stride are slower than your swing, this will be a great timing mechanism for you.

    In my opinion,

I always focused on the fast stuff. When I faced the slow pitchers then I would let the ball come really deep on me. I'd actually work on hitting the ball to right field.
