  • Take a look and comment on swing..

    Hi All,

Thanks for such an informative board! I'm posting a couple of clips of my sons swing that I'd appreciate some input on. He's right handed but for some reason just always wanted to swing left handed so I let him. He's pulling the ball in the last clip, but usually hits between left center and right center. It looks like a pretty good swing to me, but any expert help would be appreciated, as well as any drills that would be beneficial. He just turned 7 and really likes baseball.

    Thanks,

    Eric

The best part is the sounds of the parents when the vid slows down.

Your son has a nice swing for his age. Obviously tons of things to work on like every other kid but for now you should be happy that he is as far along as he is.

The one thing that jumps out at me is what he does when he starts his swing. The bat starts out a bit flat and when he goes into the swing that is when he loads up. That works great now but as me moves up if he waits to load then he is going to be late on good fastballs.

The best 7 year-old swing I've ever seen. And, I DON'T think he has "tons" of stuff to work on. Some refinements is all. The fundamentals are there.

Did he steal your bat? That thing looks huge!!

Nice swing, I only see some minor things.

The kid looks like he times the ball well and he looks pretty darn good. He might have a little bat drag, BUT, I wouldn't mess with him at all.

            My Bat..

No.. He didn't steal my bat.. lol.. Our league allows the big barrel bats, so he thought that was the coolest thing! it's 27inches and 17 ounces. Thanks for all the complements. His started playing in t-ball 2 years ago, and has always sort of had that swing. He loved to hit pinatas from an early age, so maybe that translated into baseball somehow. I've resisted the temptation to teach him much.. I've just kind of told him to let the ball get really deep and have a little rhythm going. He's hitting well, so I'm not sure what else I should or would do at this point.

            Thanks.

Yes I agree. "Tons of stuff" was a bit much. Only in that there are "tons" of stuff even the most advanced hitter can work on was my angle.

Looks like he just crushed that ball right back up the box!

It bounced off the fence in center for a double. Wind was blowing in from right center at about 15 mph or it might have gone over the fence.

I tell him the same thing you tell your kid, "let it get deep."

His mechanics are good enough where you don't want to change anything and screw him up. He'll probably self correct as he gets bigger and stronger on a couple of minor things.

Since he is doing well and already has a nice swing, you could add in a stride for more power. Lifting the foot up and down is ok... but a nice stride gives the extra nudge.

I'd even go for all the marbles and have the front foot cross the back to load the stride... at least in BP.

Is your kids swing natural? Taught by you? or and instructor?

That's the natural swing. I haven't really coached him to do anything different or change it. I do tell him that "statues can't hit", so he started a little bat waggle or rhythm when he sets up. And i've also taught him to square up to the pitcher when he gets in the box. But thats about it.
