I agree the umpire was dead wrong.

Given the situation and his "ruling" ---I thought the ladies took care of things in a pretty interesting fashion.

Yup, great story but the umpires appear to be boneheads.

Here is a cut and paste by Rich I. from another baseball forum:

    NCAA SOFTBALL

"Umpires confirmed that the only option available under the rules was to replace Tucholsky at first base with a pinch runner and have the hit recorded as a two-run single instead of a three-run home run."

    The umpires were WRONG!

    NCAA SOFTBALL RULES:

8.5.3.2 If an injury to a batter-runner or runner prevents her from proceeding to an awarded base, the ball is dead and substitution may be made. The substitute must legally touch all awarded or missed bases not previously touched.

    BASEBALL:

In LL and OBR [5.10(c)(1)] and NCAA [6-5-d] if a baserunner is injured on an award situation and cannot continue, a sub can be put in to complete the award. Thus there would still be a HR, the runs would score.

I would assume FED has a similar rule but I can't find it at the moment

It's funny how it wouldn't have even happened if it weren't for the umpire's incorrect ruling. When I first heard that story, I wondered why they didn't put in a pinch-runner to touch the rest of the bases for her. The umpire apparently said they couldn't, but this morning I heard on the news that the umpire was indeed wrong.
