  • Terms For Infield Mechanics

I heard these infield fielding terms the other day and must admit didn't know exactly what they were. Has anyone heard these terms or know what they mean in relation to infield fielding mechanics?

    Rake
    Dip and Drive
    Clamp Step
    Skip

I'm thinking the clamp step might be the step right before fielding. Skip is possibly the shuffling of the feet towards first base?

these are both guesses btw as i have never heard of these either

Maybe skip is relating sort of to a crow hop? Not a clue ... and I've only heard rake like "man that dude rakes with the bat" or is a good hitter.

Never heard ANY of them before, but from the "dip and drive" term, they appear to be cather's terms - used on PITCH OUTS (most likely).

            These are all GUESSES, though.

"Clam step" - Intial step of R/L foot to ball.

"Rake" - Moving the ball from the glove side of the body to the throwing side

"Dip and Drive" - DIP the front shoulder down & in, and DRIVE towards 2B

"Skip" - The ball (as opposed to "sailing" it)

            Again, those are only guesses.

Many in the game use vernacular that is from a time long gone, "Throwing the uncle Charlie" etc... Some of it is localized, some is just stuff people make up. I would like a nickle for all the terms I have heard over the years. Rake I have heard, the others as they apply to infielding - no.
