  • Batted Balls Knuckle

Hey guys, this year i have been hitting the ball really well but i noticed one thing. Alot of my linedrives are knuckleballs off the bat and dont spin. This leads to the ball to die. Im guessing this happens when u hit the ball perfectly square. I was wandering if this is something wrong with my swing path to the ball or if im just getting unlucky. Thanks.

Some call it batting with a flat bat. It's usually caused when your swing travels on a flat plane, which could be caused by dropping your hands.

If you're hitting the ball square, what could you be doing wrong? If anything, that is a GOOD thing. Yes, you are just "unlucky". I would be more worried if you're pounding balls into the ground with a lot of "overspin".
I wouldn't change anything; you will do yourself more harm than good. Just keep hackin', they'll fall in.

As I have told many of my players/students before:
Know the difference between "not getting a hit" and "not hitting"!!!

I agree -- with one qualification. If you're really smacking the ball, any line drive hit down the foul lines likely will hook (if pulled) or tail (if hit to the opposite field) toward the foul line. This minor spin will prevent the knuckling effect. If this isn't happening, it could be that your hands stop at impact and you're not getting any snap (and hence no side spin) as you hit through the ball. The lack of side spin is really more of a symptom of a possible problem costing you power than a problem in and of itself.
sigpicIt's not whether you fall -- everyone does -- but how you come out of the fall that counts.

I think that you're probably just really meeting the ball...and, knuckling liners are really hard to catch. I had one the other night in LF (SP) that was clearly murdered, and broke a few feet just before it got to me...I was lucky to nab it.
You should get a few hits out of those knucklers, and I'd guess that it's just random chance that you've been getting so many and will get more plain hard liners if your swing stays right.
